A thing about the Stretch Goal

One of the issues is the fact that they seem redundant when compared with the monster taming system. We were already going to get a pet system and it was far superior, then for a one million dollar stretch goal we were told that domestic animals were going to feature as pets. I don't think its a new feature so much as it is an addition onto a feature we're already getting.

I can't speak for all of us, but I want this game to do well, I want them to make a lot of money through the preorders and I want the game to be successful. I argue against the pet idea (even though its been decided) because I feel they're making a mistake, to me it appears the stretch goals have gotten less exciting as they are met and I don't feel domestic pets really get people to commit to preordering as much as the Novakids did. So I'm a little annoyed, I'm also annoyed because from my point of view, a lot of the people who supported the pets weren't aware of the tameable monsters, and thought thats what the pets were, others blindly voted yes because a developer said it and then the vast minority voted yes because they actually enjoy the idea. If I felt that more people voted yes because they thought it was a great idea I'd have no issue. But I doubt this is the case.

I echo this, the pets seem to be misplaced as a stretch goal where I feel they belonged in the 'post-release additions' section. Fossils added something you must look for, and further you can do things with it. Novakids, well a whole new race including armor and backstory. Pets? Just doesn't jump out like the others. I don't dis-like or like the idea, it just feels misplaced right now.

Judging by the percentage who vote yes, I would rather think that stretch goal may boost preorders.
Secondly, I don't know what make you think you'd make a better business strategy, but if you're that good in the market, you should send a mail to Chuklefish, I'm sure they'll like to hear from a business consultant.
Thirdly, do you really think any of that stretch goal would be the reason for anyone to preorder Starbound ? I don't

Gee I should hope stretch goals get people to preorder seeing as thats the god damn point of them.

Well. Considering the OP sounds like he doesn't know that pets were going to be in the game to begin with, just not as starter vanity pets, I don't see the big deal. If you wanna be technical Novakid are pretty much just cosmetic, and Fossils are just collectibles, which are pretty much both useless. Fossils though might have some use for DNA stuff. So yeah, they're just little guys that you get from the start of the game, until you can get new pets that can fight for you.

Also seriously, what the f**k is with all these jabs at MLP and Furry fans? This is the third thread that I have seen that have used one of them (in this case both) as a negative. They are far from being the largest crowd voting for pets, since you know, pets were already in the game, just you had to tame them. The people who voted yes, are, more then likely, the ones that thought. "Hey, a cute little pet to start out with would be cool rather then having to wait 2-3 hours to get whatever I need to be able to tame something." Plus, these starter pets are supposedly going to be customizable, which means that they are a bit more yours then going out and just finding a random cool looking randomly generated little monster.

Now. Molly has said, already, and I have mentioned in multiple threads suggesting stretch goals. They are NOT going to implement code heavy goals, they take time and will delay the game. They are hiring someone to do the Novakid assests, the fossils I'm sure they'll hire someone to do the art for that, and the coding is relatively minimal. And the pets, are something that adds in a bit more to the characters, you'll get to see what kinda little fluffy things that each race domesticated and kept as pets. Who cares if it's the 1 million mark or not, most people are probably just butt hurt because they didn't get what they wanted, which seemed to be either really code heavy stuff or a beta. x.x

And it surely is. They said repetedly they weren't expecting that preorder frenzy. They were expecting 10% of it. If they knew, they might have put the pets are the first stretch.

However like I said, I don't understand why you are so expecting the game to generate money that you're arguing ad lib saying that is not the right stretch goal, because a stretch goal is like a side salad. That's not why you ordered a meal.

I'm starting to be tired, so I'm letting you continue what you were doing. Hope that rage is gonna to ease up in the next days.

He's quite clearly using "fanboy" in a negative connotation, by juxtaposing himself and his arguments as "reasonable", when in fact such an argument is fallacious and wrong on its own merits.
Worse, he claims that the developers aren't listening to said "reason" based solely on said "fanboy" argument, without even attempting to identify what that "reason" is.

He's pouting because the developers apparently did not listen to him, and is taking it out on the community.
You will have to forgive me for not exactly feeling sympathetic towards that cause.

I know that many users here do that, and yet I prefer to just ignore blind praise.
But it pisses me off when the few of us who try to provide critical thought and arguments get lumped in as "fanboys" out of convenience and spite.
You can rationalize his generalization as much as you like; I'm not buying it.

Ah, right. I forgot to include that bit in my post. While the possibly redundant pet system addition is lackluster as compared to previous goals, it is still extra content. While not the most optimal thing to put as a stretch goal, it's far from a bad thing. My main concern is the acid pit that's grown out of getting this particular bit of extra content sooner. I just see the anger and vitriol-spewing to be highly unnecessary.

EDIT: Yes, there could have been more exciting things to perch at one million bucks. Okay. That's fine, but there's no reason or room for complaint. Pre-order or don't. Your choice, your money. I chose to spend mine, fully expecting that to be the end of that. Extra content? If you so insist!

A new race means new armours and new special abilities on those armours. Still adds more than vanity pets and arguably fossils.

People don't like them, they think they're strange and I don't blame them. They aren't the largest crowd voting yes but you can probably guarantee the vast majority pissed their pants over this.
I'd argue the ability to customize a little tiny useless vanity creature doesn't hold up to finding something that could tear through an army in minutes.

There are still better ideas for the big one million stretch goal that don't require a great deal of coding. Pets are useless and if you'd read through most of the threads arguing you'll find there are actually quite a few people (myself included) who don't want heavy coding stuff but rather something more exciting than starter pets. (I wont claim I don't want a beta, because I really do.)

Ok man you're drifting off into the troll-zone at this point. I never had rage, I said repeatedly I'm ambivalent on the pets thing and you claim I have rage? Stop inciting fires here.

That is so not the point. ATM they aren't greedy wanting cash for nothing, they wanted some cash to focus on the game development(and avoid working on other things).
But I'm stopping writing cause you're not reading

  13. Sousuke Kuroda

    Sousuke Kuroda Spaceman Spiff

No I'm reading and you're essentially saying they aren't putting stretch goals up to give people an incentive to preorder in order to reach those goals. That is exactly what stretch goals are for and I think its cute you believe otherwise.

What I can't seem to understand is why they even put up the 'official' thread in the first place. They wanted our opinions, and they got 89 pages of it and almost 2k people responded to the poll with those wanting the mini pets only beating out those not wanting them by only 200 or so?

So why even ask us what we thought of it, if after three hours they lock the thread and explain that they are going to be keeping the pets because it would be too hard to get rid of them and design something on the fly, and that it would be the million dollar stretch goal even though Molly kept on saying that was not the only option?

Why rile up the community with options that did not exist and took less than three hours to decide they were just going to do it anyway? That made no sense... What gives?

I think this is another factor in the angry tone of the forums today, you hit the nail on the head that people were indeed riled up. Anytime you have an election of any kind and you lose by less than 10% you still got almost half of people unsatisfied. Which is a very large amount.

I've been wondering this myself. It seems there remains people who genuinely believe that their distaste for a group of people entitles them to speak offensively about that group. I only hope that those people represent a vocal minority.

People don't like them? For what reason? Yeah, they're strange in some ways yeah, but that doesn't warrant someone disliking them. That's like saying you don't like someone cause they have a different view on religion then you, it's a pretty rude thing to do without getting to know someone first. Don't judge a book by it's cover and whatnot. And... I highly doubt that they were that excited about pets, since you know, the game already has Anthro races in it. A little fluffy pet isn't going to make them flip shit cause of it. I frankly didn't like the fact of the pets goal, but I don't really care if it's the one million stretch mark or not cause we already got two rather amazing additions before that.

Okay, so the other two were a bit better. But you also have consider that the Devs didn't think they were going to get as much as they did, so they might've put the first two big things for the first two goals and then put a smaller one for the one million mark. They didn't have the goals set out in front of them at the get go, they pulled some things they were going to add in already and put them up. So maybe they WOULD have put the pets at a lower mark, but maybe didn't think they'd even get close to reaching the one million mark?

Personally I don't have a problem with them, I don't like furries and bronies when they overdo it. I'm a fan of anime, I don't run around screaming "uguu" and "kawai" all the time as some of these bronies scream about "brohoofs" and what have you. Although I do think its disgusting when a furry is so open about their sexual fetish. (I know not all furries are into it for sexual reasons but a lot of them are, and are way too open about it)

I disagree, I think a lot of bronies would love the opportunity to put a little pet pony in there seeing as they like to integrate MLP into everything for some reason thats beyond me. I'll agree its wrong to dislike a person based solely on the fact that they're a brony, I don't think its wrong to do so after that person relentlessly talks about it with you and lets it serve as an identifier for them. (As in, a lot of bronies have signatures, names, display pictures and most of the time I can't tell one from another)

I don't understand why people thinks this excuses them. They should have been prepared, stop defending them all the time. Considering how long it took them to get a preorder up and running you'd think they would have planned for this kind of thing. It makes me wonder how much of a mess the development process must be and if it really is as planned as they claim it is if they can't get a few stretch goals in mind prior to setting up a tiered based preorder system. Don't misunderstand me, I respect the developers and their hard work, I don't think that excuses them for being unprepared.
