A simple question.

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum, and I just bought Starbound today. Needless to say, I love this game! It was a great step from Terraria, which I completed; as well as a good thing to do while I wait for Edge of Space to update a bit more, as the game is pretty bland and unfinished as of now. Anyway, now for my actual question... I saw (I think on the Wiki) that in order to get Alien Meat from mobs, you have to kill them with some form of Hunting Bow. What I have noticed though, is that I get Meat from killing them with swords as well, and I don't always get Pixels with I kill them with a sword. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks!

 

In a recent update it was stated that you can get meat from killing them wirh swords too, just not 100%

Yeah, there is a much greater chance of getting meat from mobs when you use a bow, and a much lesser chance when using any other weapon type, including guns. You don't get pixels after every kill, either. Not sure why, you just don't. It also seems to be a random amount of pixels (in my experience), because I sometimes get 1 pixel from killing a mob, then 25 from killing the same mob, or 100 on rare occasions I think.

 

Hmm, yeah, I have noticed that as well. I have not seen anything over 100 though, but oh well.

 

I believe the hunting knife (lvl 1 weapon) has a slightly higher chance of dropping meat upon kill then a normal blade.

Yeah, unfortunately unlike the bow it does not have upgrades so it is only really useful for Alpha Sector planets.

Even though the upgrades for the bow still make it useless in endgame, really. *cough* farming is the only way to go *cough* mmm....sweet corn...

Enemies in the Alpha Sector have a chance to drop meat whatever you kill them with, but it's much higher with the Hunting Knife or the Bow. Enemies in later Sectors drop hardened Monster Plate, and Cell Materia. All enemies have a chance to drop Pixels, and the higher the Sector the more they drop. There may be some other drops that I can't remember I have been in the X Sector for some time now.

 

Was in angry koala onward.... Which means 3rd-5th update... I only know this due to that is when I was finally able to afford getting the game.

Regardless, later on in I think gamma onward you will see even less meat due to the treasure pool for monsters having more in them. So cell materia & hardened shell?! would drop as well, making it even less likely that standard weapons drops meat. Still drops, just not as often as alpha or beta.

So using what others have mentioned is best, the knife for alpha and I think the bow up to gamma/delta... I don't think there are any more upgrades for that after it... unsure of that last bit, never really gotten beyond the delta...(Mostly based on what I have read here and there of others finding and playing vanilla)

On the contrary, my crossbow is very useful on tier 9 and 10 planets.
