A short compilation of pixel displeasure from facepunch.com

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by ScottyWired, Dec 5, 2013.

  1. This. Sorry, I hope I didn't make it seem like people shouldn't have opinions or voice them. It's just that when opinions come off as whining those potentially constructive criticism lose their effectiveness as a positive message of communication. The conflict isn't a bad thing, but both the developer and the consumer have a responsibility to communicate effectively.

The beta hasn't even been out for 24 hours. How is that "so long"?

Your post adds nothing to this discussion except insult the developer straight-up. Don't act like it was "obvious" to the developers that pixels were badly done. That's why it's a beta version- because they're still testing how people will react.

Can you explain in what way it makes sense that we need 3D printer fuel to make copper armor from copper bars on an anvil?

People are making suggestions now because now is the first time they can objectively say if they like a feature or not. I do not like pixels for crafting because it makes no sense in the lore. I did not know before beta that pixels were needed to craft, so I could not have said that I dislike it before the beta. If that info was available, I missed it.

There would be simple ways to make this work better. For example, instead of costing whatever ammlount of pixels, it could be implemented that you need to use your 3D printer to make additional crafting components for each item. Same end result, but more logic. And tweaking the price of these items below its pixel cost would even mean you cannot "save" your pixels without losing some or all.

I really don't understand why this whole system even exists. It sort of defeats the whole purpose of exploration. To find cool stuff rather than mindlessly grind for it. Sort of reminds me of Terraria endgame too, which isn't all that great to be honest.

I'm guessing pixels are just meant to be a way of buying stuff, sort of a bonus for not dying too much, and that the actual crafting/exploration aspects haven't just been really refined yet.

The time in closed alpha and beta since they coded the crafting recipes, that so many people have been flaming over the release of a "looks playable" version?

And indeed, I realize my first post wasn't exactly as civil as I suggested later.

  7. Fully on-board with constructive criticisms and suggestions. I didn't know that either, and the more I think about it the less stringent (if at all) I would want the pixel cost to craft things with basic kits, especially the lower tech things. Maybe if there are some sort of higher tier machines that could expend an energy cost I could see it for the higher tier craft-able high tech equipment. If the pixels are needed they should be a fraction of the cost to fully replicate an item with a 3D printer.

Hmm, I never had a problem with Pixels. You don't need a whole lot and killing innocent townspeople give a nice amount. I think it just goes as far as knowing where to get them efficiently. I may try tier 3 soon to see what pixels are like over there, oh and tier 2 mobs give 100~ pixels each. (Though they one shot you...)

I was really disappointed when I realized I had to go out and grind mobs even though I had all the materials at the ready. Mining all that ore took long enough...

from the look of things they wanted money to matter in the game, but had gone overboard with the pricing.

here are my thoughts on the matter:

    - pixels shouldn't be used on scaning in the 3d printer, only in actually printing it
    - a pixel bank would solve ALL the gameplay problems, still not lore friendly though.
    - if you want to be lore friendly, then you need to take pixel away from crafting, it just don't make sense.
    - take away the money penalty or make it lower, like 10%, 35% is too much.
    - and the simplest of all, let people make a shield and 1-h sword early on, after i found a shield i only died 2 times and have accrued almost 3k pixels, and i am fighting bandits parties with full automatic rifles with a dagger.

Yeah, it feels like it's something they're going to upgrade or replace later on.
Especially with the worth of different things, it's just rather unbalanced and wacky at the moment.

I definitely agree. Pixels should be for creating things in the 3D printer and as NPC currency. That's it. Needing them for scanning made me end up storing tons of crap in my ship's storage that I wanted to keep for later, but couldn't afford to scan. Such a letdown and horribly cumbersome! Needing them for crafting basic items meant that after all the effort of finding all the needed materials, I still had to go out and grind mobs for pixels, which wasn't fun at all.

I approach combat out of necessity in games like these. Hunting for food, fine. Self defense, fine. Breaking into a high-security facility, fine. Grinding for pixels, not cool.

You forgot to put all the comments from the side that hasn't had a single problem with the pixels so far.

Oh wait, that would give away the impact huh? Nevermind then.

If none of them give any comments, how do you know whether they're sincerely fine or just didn't bother saying because everything has been said already?

You're not a dev. You don't actually decide what they want to hear. This isn't babby's first internet. If the devs can't handle some people saying a game design flaw is shit, then they shouldn't have made a game. An actual game dev will hear what people are saying regardless if its "profane" or "rude" and will work around it anyway.

I don't really know who you think you are to say people can't speak the way they want to. You can feel free to tell people not to be a big meanie, though.

I'm in agreement about the pixel costs being ridiculous, but I almost want to say they did it on purpose because there is only there tiers right now and they didn't want that going too quickly.

Why do we need to pay pixels to craft things? I don't understand that :l

Personally, I think the very first set of armor/weapons (copper level) should not cost pixels. You really need these ASAP to increase your survivability; once you have them, it's much easier to stay alive on the starter planet and keeping your pixels is no longer as big of an issue. Once you get to that point, you can choose what worlds to visit, so if you die on a higher level planet, well, it's your own fault. :) The trouble is that with your starter planet, you have no other options to make things easier. Also, for those who haven't already figured this out, bandages are your friend. Keep a nice stack of them with you at all times. Also, you want to visit new planets pretty soon after you get the basic armor/weapon going; the starter planet is pretty resource-poor and it's a real grind to get materials.

Note that once you get a short ways into Tier 2, you can refine ores into pixels, which means you actually can 'bank' the ores and then turn them into pixels when you need them. I don't think you can go the other way, but it means you can keep around a stack of copper ore for emergency pixel production. Again, though, by that point you're generally earning pixels faster than you're losing them, as you don't die nearly as often. Most of my deaths now are actually falling damage from getting knocked back off a cliff or hill. :p

I love the concept of pixels, but I absolute HATE how many you need for items. Why do you need 1000 pixels for an iron chestplate, but only 300 for a silver one? That makes no sense....

I could only see pixel costs for high tier crafting, when you're actually making high tech items.
