Does anyone else just want a quick update, a basic update; not nightly or anything like that. But just a solid release for non opt into options on steam? Just, Throw in the new combat system and monsters and etc?

They already tried this, and got whiners. I don't think they're looking for a repeat of character wipes drama, which is what the opt-in programs are for

    VERY MUCH YES

If they don't bring people back with something, there might not be any people left to bring back.

But if they release a stable with

    Ore loss mining sand
Ore drop at death on normal
New character always start on forest/mushroom
    No surface caves
Needing a whole 20 core stones and core stones are so low most are in obsidion

I'm sure there will be tons of complaining/and/or laving again right away.

The pickaxe change will get some but I think people will deal since that's the same as all the other major miners.

Don't know how people will take the no more surface ores.

Well yes, but I want all the "etc" Ships, missions, dungeons, outposts, combat, enemies, shops, NPC stuff and so on.
A stable build with a few little features tacked on will be the game we have now with a few minor additions.
How long will a few new enemies and combat changes contain people before we want everything else being done anyway?

And in reality that's what they are doing, pushing for an update with content, perhaps with bigger scope than some would like. (Not exactly a terrible thing)

Keep in mind, the old daily updates were fine if you played without mods, but if you did use mods? Chances are your game might not even launch for that day because the devs changed something in the code or assets without mentioning in the rather (at the time) sparse patch notes. I use the Avali race mod, among others, and only a few days or so after the daily updates, Ryuujin updated the mod and mentioned in the update that the devs changed their legacy parsing code without mentioning it in the patch-notes. A lot of undocumented changes pretty much made life well, unpleasant for the people who create mods.

This was supposed to be during updates that were pretty much going to be art updates for in-game stuff, I think. I just remember vanilla players not being hit anywhere near as hard by the daily updates as those who use mods.

I wasn't having a problem with it, just saying other people were.

Is it not interesting that they would rather deal with whiners now who are fed up with a lack of new, stable content than deal with whiners and actually produce tangible results? To claim eliminating even sporadic stable updates to quiet complainers at the expense of credibility is the ideal situation seems strange to me. I think they could have simply ignored the people were complaining about the updates that were occurring much like they are doing now...instead of changing their approach which essentially punishes the whole community.

To be honest, I think it is too late to do a small update. It has been around 3ish months since the last one (more if you are a game has not changed since feb or dec person). I feel a small update might be welcome but will ultimately be complained about for being small and taking way too long to come out relative to its size. Be nice if I was wrong though.

No, I don't want a small update at this point... I'll contentedly yet eagerly wait for the biggun!

i can wait a bit more for a stable update if that saves in someway our ship/characters, even will be better if universe would saved also, if we have wipes after this long time without stable updates i think it will be a deception, solving the wipes, i think they have been working a lot in optimization and new features, game recode, so i think next stable update will be big one, and i expect without any kind of wipes

Just feel I should note they DID warn about one more universe wipe being likely before the game is done (not saying it will happen in the next patch, just that they have mentioned it since even though they made it eaiser to patch players and universes without wipes they feel one more might be needed for the finalzation of the universe).

Even though they might not, they should. It'd probably cut down on a lot of outdated bug posts.

The unfortiunate thing is people will complain about a wipe after this long. Not to mention they can only do a world wipe as they said there should be no more character wipes and doing that would just give people another "lie" from the devs.

But yeah, a wipe would insure no bugs realted to areas and characters being updated to the new formats and possibly generated systems lacking new things. We will have to see what they do.

Yea you're right. I just think it'd probably be less of a headache with keeping track of everything. Of course that depends on how many bug reports are already known bugs anyway.

Thing is, they've already wasted enough time catering to the people who can't acknowledge an early access game that it's taking otherwise productive time to do.

Having a new build every week is only a good thing when it's not a huge hassle for everyone involved. When you're talking about an update with some MINOR changes and bugfixes using up people's limited bandwidth, potentially invalidating world files, messing up mods and forcing server admins to reconfigure their servers, it simply isn't worth the effort. That's the reason they changed their approach, not to satisfy some "complainers".

And please, stop trying to dramatize the issue. It's not as if they're doing less just because it's not being immediately pushed to a stable build. Instead of viewing the lowered frequency of updates as "punishment", why not simply look forward to the next one that much more? After all, I hear it's going to be a big one :p

Though, like I said before, I'm in favor of at least one more stable/unstable build being put out before the big 1.0. Enough new content and features have been added for it to be worth it, at least once the outpost is finished and ready to go.

I do wonder if that would help. Minus the bugs and glitches the stuff in the nightly is neat. Just hope doing that would not lessen the impact of the 1.0 update too much.

Good point, though it kind of depends on just how much more they're planning to have done before b1.0. If there's still going to be a ton of stuff it should be alright. But if it's going to be done soonish they may want to hold off on that to avoid stealing their own thunder, so to speak. Terraria was able to regain a lot of attention by putting out a massive update with 1.2, I suspect Starbound might be heading towards a similar situation here.

  19. linkthegamer

    linkthegamer Master Astronaut

Yeah that is my guess... especially since I know the gap is cuasing some people to discount previous updates making the gap between them larger so not sure. I do hope whatever they due it has the desired effect for them.

You mention that having frequent builds is only a good thing when it's not a hassle for everyone involved. The very nature of subscribing to a game that is an alpha or beta status involves dealing with such hassles. Nobody here that has already purchased Starbound should have done so with even the slightest thought that they would be getting a polished game at this stage. Nobody forced anyone here to jump in and invest in a project at such an early stage. I get that the people who can't handle bugs and issues are going to complain, but that's on them. They can simply step aside and realize that maybe they should have thought twice before embarking in an early-access journey.

On the other hand, I did jump in and invest at an early stage because there was a lot of promise and a lot to be excited about. Now the game is so fragmented that the nightlies aren't even a reasonable option, because they extend far beyond the usual hassles and quirks that I ever saw when there were more frequent stable updates. They pulled the rip cord and everything is all over the place. Even with the frequent updates on the news page, I still have no clue what is going on.
