Well I guess that eventually the monsters would break down your shield, and if not, their numbers could increase, and fighting your way out will be... Difficult...
This is a good idea. Some people may not want to focus on defense and base protection and concentrate instead on crafting and building, among other things. It would be great if you didn't have to look over your shoulder or check you perimeter if pulling security sounds like a job best left to a brute with nothing else to do v_v
It seems like a good idea, but the protector YOU make should be... I dunno, weaker than the dungeon prot. Still, it's a pretty cool thing to have. (although Couldn't some turrets on wheels do a good job too?)
Maybe guards?A system in the game were you can hire and equip guards. (I think hiring players will become boring, because no one want to wait someone attack the base)
I haven't heard of these things before, but having turrets to protect your base definitely should be fun in many ways.
as long as the turrets aren't overpowered. i think you do need to have to put SOME effort into protecting your base rather than a few turrets and your fine forever
That's true, but if a Protector guarantees a safe base then it should be hard to research/craft, perhaps you need to reverse engineer a dungeon's protector or use it as an ingredient in yours.
This is very close as the new PVP MODE Terraria 1.2 will have, only difference there isn't protector items, just cannon everything and invade the Base. Still since PVP Modes are confirmed for after launch, this would be a nice idea.
Hmm. . . If you had a system that incorporated stuff like turrets, then the variability of the mobs should go up. For the most part, turrets would be able to handle your base quite nicely (Or for well designed/large systems, a good bit outside your house as well.) But occasionally some bigger beastie will come up that your turrets can't handle on their own, so the system gives a warning to you. (If you crafted the sensor that can detect them and have radio communication with your base's computer. Which, if you didn't plan right or something went horribly wrong, then you could be out of service.) This warning will give you time to get back to your base for defence, and depending on the tech level of the sensor, you might have ample time to prepare, or it's delivering a warning so that you can prevent him from ripping up the other half of your base. Turrets should have health, and are attackable. (Depending on the type of turret, you might have to place it on the ground, or you could place it on a wall where only ranged/flying enemies could reach it.) They also consume base reactor energy, so you can't bristle your base with turrets without also having a similar reactor, so it's more expensive. forcefields also consume energy that increases as more force gets applied to it. A well-designed base would probably have a fuse to cut it off at a predetermined energy consumption level so your base doesn't go completely dark. Natural hazards could also be used to your advantage, pits being obvious, just watch out for tunneling mobs, combine that with lava/dangerous liquids/gases, and you'd be able to deal with most threats, but some monsters are immune to -- or even benefit from -- those hazards.
You should build on a more hospitable planet then. There should definitely be planets that try to brutally murder you all the time.
I am ambivalent. If there are protectors for one's base, they should be very, very hard to craft/acquire - very valuable even for late-end game and with limited number of them per player. The one base that really matters is on board of the ship, though I understand that people would also like tob uild some nice structures on some planets - and preserve them. Thus, yeah - a protector, but rare so it will be a priviledge and something to strive for, not some random craft that everyone will put everywhere. Personally, I'd rather have players build their bases with endurance in mind - with dense hulls of strong materials etc, the way bases which may be under the threat of destruction should be built. Hell, I hope that there well be worlds (of course, in minority) where some creatures will be able to destroy walls and entrances made out of weaker materials.
