We all have our opinions... I don't necessarily understand yours though. This thread and what the Dev team created are one and the same. Are you saying you like this idea AND don't like it at the same time? Or are you saying you want the whole thing optional? I'm lost.

  2. I've edited my post later on, don't know if you've seen that.
    This was my whole post
This and the lighting coming out from the starts and illuminating planets are two different things. Here we have some cheap post-process effects which will probably have some impact on the performance whilst the shining stars is a part of the game, not an option switch.
Besides I don't like those presets, not the examples - just the idea, it ruins the art style a bit in my personal opinion.
Again, I'm sorry I didn't make my post clearer, hopefully this one carries my thoughts in a better, easier to read way.
    If you're still confused - reply/pm me :)

With some Idea tweaking this could become in game!

I do believe that one of my favourite aspects of gaming is becoming immersed in the atmosphere. I can say that my favourite image where you used filters must be when it was raining. There's nothing I like more than being able to sit and appreciate the effect that the rain and lighting has on a person's experience.

I read a lot of the comments (I'm like that) and though I can honestly say that this subject and the technicalities of gaming in general aren't a strong point of mine, I can 'feel' the effect that these filters have on me (perhaps even emotionally).

I can also agree with others when they say that some of the filters might inhibit a player's experience somewhat, by being visually stressful, or even dull and depressing. However (and I'm most likely echoing the majority of past comments), if done with care and consideration, I can only see the good that can come with these features.

Also, the level of thought and technicality added to this suggestion really makes my suggestion look 'pathetic' and nullified in many ways. Very interesting to read and appreciated :)!

Again, limited experience so I might just have spewed a bunch of nonsense.

Technically, they're both post-processes/after-effects/post-rendering. They are the same thing entirely. The color "shining" or tinting is post sprite render, the actual sprite remains unedited. This goes with ALL videogame lighting and lighting effects... From Skyrim to COD4 to Metroid Fusion. Anytime you see an explosion in games casting a red light, or funky mushrooms casting a cyan light. It is after the environment has been rendered. And does not affect the original asset's default coloration.

I limited myself to warm or cool color "shining" in the environment. And made it ubiquitous, instead of just on surfaces. So my idea was mainly limited to weather having dynamic effects. Except for the last image, where I actually did exactly the same thing that was in today's update, just way more subdued. Which is not necessarily a good or bad thing. The Devs took it to level 11 and had the Star system affect lighting instead of "just" the planets environment or temperature.

In fact if they make today's update a system, and not hard coded into the main build, it could be used without alteration to make this suggestion thread possible. I hope it is a moddable system and not base code. So that if need be I can provide this as a mod myself to people who like it.

What I did that is not "entirely" the same is the film grain, sun glare, things like that. Although, those to can use the same system if it is put in place. They differ in that they aren't entirely related to lighting effects. But have to do with more broad "special" effects. Similar to HDR bloom (Which I would personally also include).

I'd even go a step further and make the brightness be highly exaggerated when first stepping out of a dark cave/room. And highly diminished when stepping into a dark room from somewhere brightly lit. You know, before your eyes adjust.

Sorry, I realized I just went off on a ramble. But, thanks for your criticism I take it as a good thing. But my idea is much bigger than I made it seem. I just didn't want to write an encyclopedia.

Postprocessing is/was used by games to mask the bad models and visuals before we had the power to make good models.
Cell shading is a postprocess effect and gives Okami its awesome style.
Personally, I think there are way too many pixellated games to make it an interesting art decision. Something like a subtle postprocess blur or an occasional distortion would do wonders to break the grid and make the game much more visually interesting than the countless pixellated flash games.

I wish I could hit the like button a thousand times. This is EXACTLY the response I hoped to drum up. Even some of the critics are correct too.

To speak about the image you liked, I think it would be awesome if in Starbound, and gaming in general really. If, well, you know that feeling you get outside when you KNOW it's about to rain just because of the way the sky and everything looks? That. The whole coloration thing! Games don't have to be ultra high def. Or a million polygon models. Just make them well thought out.

If that image I used didn't have a single drop off rain in it. And I put the caption. "It's about to pour". I think people would get it. Because it looks like it's about to really come down. I don't know if the Dev team has anything like this planned, even though they said it was a cool idea. But I may create it myself.

You have fine taste in games.

I'm just waiting on a cell shaded "true" Zoids universe game.

    No?

Am I the only one holding onto that from my childhood?

One other thing that I might mention is that as I was typing my previous comment, I had an overwhelming urge to return to those images, purely out of appreciation and inspiration for what I was trying to say.

I can feel a huge measure of respect for when people create imaginative, creative and even technical works of genius; but nothing can substitute the certain feeling you get when someone has reproduced something that you have personally experienced.

Through these filtered images and the idea of using filters in the game in general, I personally believe that sitting at the computer playing this game won't just be a great experience (because it undoubtedly will be), but it will also be (and I'm going to get a bit corny here) a beautiful experience; where you can reminisce about the times where you just sat and enjoyed a certain escalated mood that I have only ever naturally achieved while (as you said) feeling the darkness creep in before a storm (an exciting experience) or being inside with a warm glow, while outside everything is sharp and cold.

To others it may not seem like much, but to me, it's powerful stuff.

Make it toggleable in Graphics Interface. Everyone happy.

It will end up in the game one way or another. It may be made an option. I've actually been speaking with one of the Devs about it.

I like this idea, and I suppose the main concern that people have undoubtedly already brought up is the graphics requirements for this. And the solution would be making it an option.

I don't really have anything to add to this discussion that hasn't definitely already been said in 7 pages, but I thought I'd just leave a note of support.

If this idea makes it into the game, I will definitely try it out. If it doesn't work well, I'll turn it off, but I'll be sad about it not working. If it does work, I think I'd keep it on all the time. It would definitely improve my experience.

There should be a graphic level setting for small little things like this.

But what about the people that have good computers but don't like a particular setting?
This is what I hate about graphics settings sliders, certain options that cause problems might be on the ''crappiest computer in the world'' level, and makes the game look like complete ass just to remove a single option that should have a checkbox.

I resent that statement, this thread ain't dead! But I've seen that Reddit post already. Tiy was just sating someone's curiosity. Although, I would LOVE that filter as an option included next to mine. Perhaps in the "graphics" menu. I think it was just a temporary thing.

Although I do agree that there is a possibility of it being worked on, well if this is any consultation...

Including Mollygos and Bartwe swinging by the thread and thinking it is a cool idea. That's half of the development team! Someone better add filters! ;D

Hm.... I have to agree with Omni on this one. I still wish that the filters would be less intense, and, as a consequence, less immersive and less pretty. But still, I suppose it is ok if I can somehow turn it off.

  19. Pseudoboss

What if there were a slider to change the intensity of the filter?
I don't think that would be too difficult to implement, and it would be really cool if you had a general slider, that affected all filters, and a specific slider that only operates on the filter that you're seeing at that particular moment, so that if you have a single filter that you find to be really annoying, you could tone it down to acceptable levels without affecting other filters that you might find really pretty, and don't want to go back into settings and change the slider when you encounter a specific filter.

A graphics menu in general should be included. Some people have really good computers and may want to crank up the graphics. I wonder if a new menu entry can be modded in?
