Hello TiY and the rest of the community. First of all I would suggest that you make it clear about how many updates you are going to implement into the game starbound. I thought it was unfair to the Terraria community that we didn't get all the updates we felt were promised to us. I personally think Terraria could have gone a lot further but I understand that it was marketed for much cheaper then was required to keep the game going strong. I hope you are able to build your fan base with Starbound and then go to work on Terraria 2 and release it as a full game with all the features we hoped would have been added to the first Terraria.
Different developers, different game, different focus. Wait a bit for some more information before making your decision on Starbound. Also, the developers have said that they are only going to have a closed beta (unlike the open beta for Terraria) so when the game is properly released it will be much closer to the finished product than when Terraria came out, and so updates won't be so much of a worry.
What I am trying to say is that I am concerned that the Devs aren't going to be committed to making updates for this game once the game makes a big profit. I am concerned that people will buy this game thinking that there will be lots of updates and that the devs will then quit without keeping their promises like they did with Terraria. If this type of expression is not tolerated however Then feel free to delete this post and take whatever action you wish.
Yes, I know, we are alle very sad about Terraria not getting updated any more. But this is not the reasons to blame a whole other community for it. Really, every single post I have ssen of you so far is something about "Terraria is better" "Do it like Terraria" and, and, and... If you don't like this community, then get lost! Make your own game if you think you are allowed to say others how they should make their game. Or be at least quiet.
I don't mean no updates (fingers crossed ) ! Don't worry! Everyone likes updates hehe, and Tiy has already expressed his desire to keep adding content after the game is released, such as modding support and director mode. I just meant more along the lines of when the game is released it should be much more of a cohesive finished product, and you won't have to keep starting again every couple of weeks to properly experience the new content. I'm expecting larger less frequent updates instead of the way Terraria updates were handled
Again, it's not the same developers, so don't fret about what may or may not happen down the line. Just go with the flow and see how things pan out.
Your ignorance is so funny, maybe if you actually researched for more than a week into a game and the developers you would see how much of an asshole you look like....
And sorry if I offended you, you seem like a nice guy and such, but I think you just have to understand that this is nothing like Terraria (You could also say battlefield copyed cod because it involves shooting). If you like the community, you can post nice things, be creative, play Terraria, whatever. Just don't offend the community. Come on, you can do that, right? ^^
Well I didn't think I was offending any to begin with but now that I did I hope I don't do anything else that offends some one.
As you probably saw, I replied to some more of your posts. Arround 50% were Terraria related. Dont understand me wrong, relating things to Terraria is not bad at all, we all do it. But you have to consider that this game is not Terraria, not Terraria 2 and it is not beeing developed by re-logic. Other people, other games. Oh, and sorry if I may have to destroy your dream, but there is never going to be a Terraria 2, or anything like that. Do you know that feeling, if someone just doesn't understand what you are meaning, thinking he is right. And you just want to know it bettet than him? Well, I have that feeling, and it seems sensless even trying to explain you how ignorant you are. Dont get me wrong, I really am a peacefull person, and I don't want tu hurt anyones feelings. But that dreamworld just doesn't exist! Meet realitiy! Go outside, explore the world, come back and enjoy whatever game you would like!
Ha ha OK but I have a feeling Star bound is going to be alot like Terraria. I may be wrong but I doubt it. Either way StarBound should be a good game and I will probably get it when it comes out unless I am too occupied with Diablo 3.
As a developer this really frustrates me. Why should the Devs be obliged to keep updating a game with new content after it's final release? I'm sorry to sound so harsh but we're not living in a free world, and you can't expect people to keep giving out free stuff once a product is released. You don't see large companies giving free content out on a monthly basis without asking for money, so why should an indie company? You don't buy a new TV and expect the company to come to your house every month and keep adding another couple of inches to the size. It seems like ever since a younger generation started playing the BETA of Minecraft they expect free content. I have to keep explaining what a beta is, because you're going to get updates on a game that isn't officially released yet. The whole Terraria argument is like watching people beat a dead horse. I spent a long time in the Terraria forums and i've never seen such ungreatful comments in my life before. /rant tl;dr Yes, expect a few updates, but don't expect a company to continue giving out content for free once it's officially released. Bug fixes, yes. Content, no.
Devs have the right to charge for content updates and SHOULD charge for content updates but they SHOULD NOT promise free content updates and imply that there will be MANY content updates for YEARS to come and then not give out any more updates AT ALL!
This is exactly what people don't seem to be able to fathom these days! It's because they never experienced the days before everything was connected to the internet. I'd be perfectly happy to pay for expansion packs after the game is released though. Tiy has said that he hopes to continue to support the game well after it's released, and he dislikes micro-transactions so my hopes are high. I hate the microtransaction model of today. A lot of the time it ends up being extortionately expensive for what is mostly rubbish extra content that would never form any kind of worthwhile expansion pack on its own.
Heard of portal 2's DLCs? that is very nice of them, the even have sales on release, I don't expect sales, but I do expect updates. and minecraft was OUT at 1.0.0 and it is now 1.2.3. someone make a list of game that had content updates please.
Yes some developers do do it, but that doesn't mean you should be expecting it. Some people become billionaires, some people have sex changes, some people sell all their worldly possessions and go and live in the woods. This world is full of variation. It's down to the developer to decide what they do after the game is release. Once you've bought the released product (ie properly released, not in Beta) you should accept the fact that you're buying what is considered a whole product. Don't buy on the assumption that it's going to be improved indefinitely after release, and their is no obligation for them to do so. When it comes down to it, the main factor is cost. Developers simply cannot afford to keep giving away things for free, which is where expansion packs come in. Developers make more money, people get more amazing content, everybody wins. You wouldn't go into a job, get paid for your first month and then work for free for the rest of the year, so why should developers. With regards to minecraft, that has sold a very very large number of copies meaning that Mojang can afford to leave a few people working on it while they make their other games (not taking into account a lot of people like you that expect them to keep updating it as well). That being said they really haven't added anything of worth since 1.0.0 so it's not like they've put a lot of work into it. ALL of this taken into account it is still quite likely that they may add a few things after the game is released because that's the kind of nice people they are. Just don't go forward expecting anything from them after they've already worked hard on making an amazing game to release.
