I have been a fan of many a game over the years. RTS games, FPS games, Console games...etc. And I have come to wonder about the variety of ways that a character could get down to the planet and more.

From some of the screen shots there is the shuttle/troop transport. But what about a sub orbital drop using pods? Or may be pods that can go through re-entry and leave a crater where they land. That would be an interesting way to get the character on planet.

The reason I am curious is I am sure not every planet will be an uninhabited explore fest. I mean there should be a few out there that have other civilizations on them, and that some of those people may not be the happiest to see some alien on their soil. So sending in a shuttle may be hazardous...

    Thoughts, comments, etc?

I think this is a great idea, it will give the game a more realistic feeling to it.

I think when we want to go down on a planet's surface we should be able to chose the method of touchdown.

May be the pod can be shaped like a house and land on a witch. Heh. Any way allot of possibilities...May be even as respawning for PVP

Nope, Beyond popular belief...the world does not revolve around Halo. :-D This idea has roots in Warhammer 40k.

It is a very large game world, The table top game is very well documented. And the RTS games made by Relic follow canon quite well. FOR THE EMPEROR!!!!!

As an interesting thought, the character could also be dropped in a pod for particularly rough terrain planets, or may be ones with a hostile atmosphere. And the player would then need to construct (from a kit) a landing pad or a hanger for shuttles to land on/in. This way if you have flaming rain falling from the sky...the shuttle does not melt while you explore with your lava retardant umbrella.

    Might I suggest beaming down?

But that's no fun...and if they beamed down then why would they also need a shuttle. Plus may be they will save the beaming down for late game. Oh may be those harsh worlds are ones that you can not beam down to...yep so many possibilities.

Drop ship or a mother ship would be cool :) I would like varieties of ships and ship-types I guess, who wouldn't want to ride around on a UFO or some type of urban war-machine type of ship?

I'm a fan of Warhammer 40K drop pods, too.
MULTIPLE, SIMULTANEOUS AND DEVASTATING DEFENSIVE DEEP STRIKES!
It's hilarious to call drop pods on enemies heads. WHAM!

On that note, I hope that you can call your Mech in some sort of huge box from space.
...so that I can drop it right on someone's head. ;)

The idea of drop pods is cool, but how would you get off of the planet you drop to? would it be able to fly back off or what

Drops pods do just that, they drop.
Getting back up would need something else. Beam up? :)

If it needs a lore reason:
It's safe to beam up people back on the space station because they know the exact coordinates.
When dropping down on a planet you don't necessarily have all the details.
You don't wanna get beamed down with uncertain coordinates and find out that there's a tree branch through your stomach. :p

I was thinking that dropships could be used for flatter planets where a large team is required, and drop pods could be used for rough planets where rapid insertion is key.

no no the idea of drop pods is to 1) get the hell off you ship fast 2) Orbital tactical attacks 3) make an awesome entrance to lesser advanced civilizations 4) be like a sayin and leave giant creators everywhere 5) be able to land in extremely hostile elements 6) can be controlled while in drop to avoid (or hit) mega cities 7) to have FUN!

The way I see it, you have insertion pods, drop pods and escape pods.
