Tell me more about how easy to avoid it is when you have 7 flying dragon things honed into your blood scent while a pack of purple slimes wobbles over to you and all the exits are guarded by invincible sand beetles. It's really not as easy as "Just leave" sometimes. You get put into a position where unless you're the worlds luckiest person, you're going to die. Like I said before I only died once, but it was one of those situations - Where the random generation decided to drop a hundred things on me all at once.
That sounds like a "don't go to Skull Cave on a bad luck day" situation. If you feel like you must, I'd recommend keeping a staircase or two in your inventory so that you can create a quick exit when necessary. Or a warp totem.
I don't mind it too much, I never allow myself to collapse in the minds either so, there ya go. Would be nice if the random loss of items didn't include your tools/weapons, only items found in the mines themselves.
I don't see the unforgiving part in the game..? Enter prepared, keep pushing but don't push too hard. In case of a serious emergency, there are items that you can craft to get the hell outta there.... totems, staircases...
staircases(99 stone) will always put u next to the ladder on the next floor. if ur below 1/4 hp, and u dont have food, i'd suggest not going on. if ur below 40%, i'd suggest not using holes. dont forget you take damage from the fall too. i'd suggest keeping ur health topped off with food instead of waiting till u need more health before eating.
There has to be some punishment, so losing some knowledge is a novel and fair way I think. Losing items is also a realistic event, although should be capped at stuff collected in the mines and not tools or weapons. The money is a real kicker, there should be a bank or a way of offsetting or protecting money (like you can by dumping tools in chests at the start of the mines) so that you aren't carrying around your life savings every time you go in.
Why does there "have" to be some punishment? It's a casual game, not Dark Souls. Anything more than simply going unconscious and waking up back in bed is going to seem unforgiving in this sort of game. With that said, I have no qualms about quitting and reloading the game on a rare death occasion. I prefer not to have death-penalty stress in a game like this one. It was bad enough having a Joja rep come and steal 1000g because I had the audacity to pass out ON MY OWN FARM. Thieving trespasser!
I don't really think the penalty is that unfair. I'm not saying GIT GUD CAZULS (I'm not exactly hardcore myself), and I'm certainly not implying that the penalty isn't harsh, but I still don't think it's unfair. I think I've died precisely once, but only in the skull caverns, and only because I was doing an endurance run. It's not difficult to remember to bring plenty of food, and realize that you might be in trouble at around a fifth of your health with nothing to restore it. The game gives you plenty of warnings and cautions about staying healthy, and if you want to ignore them, it's not the code's fault. Besides, with fishing, cooking, foraging, and of course keeping a small percentage of what you grow, it's not like there's any shortage of restoratives in the game.
Maybe, but without some sort of penalty it's open to abuse and anyone who can't be bothered to manage their time can just push it past the limit as an easy way to get back to to the farm. Makes a bit of a mockery of that particular game function.
This thread is specifically about being knocked out by monsters and the penalty of losing items. No one really cares too much about the money lost when passing out from exhaustion or because it got too late, since money is no real issue for the majority of players. The thing is that if a punishment is so harsh that people prefer replaying the whole day over accepting the punishment, it's not doing its job very well.
So just wake up outside of the entrance to the mine instead of at home. It really doesn't matter. Most of us are just going to quit without saving and reload anyway. I just don't see the need for harsh and unforgiving penalties in this sort of game.
There was one time where I woke up, planning to get my Horse Stable built. I stopped to crack open some Geodes, got a new Artifact, donated it, and got some Furniture as a reward. I then headed up to Robin's place. Upon going into to Robin's house, find that she's not behind the counter. It was probably a Tuesday or something. "Well, that sucks," I thought to myself, "I guess while I'm in the area, I'll just try to get to the next Elevator Level in the Mines instead." Because I didn't have the horse yet (obviously) and was still working on getting a Gold Bar to complete the Boiler Room bundles and didn't have access to the Mine Carts, I just took everything I had on me into the mines rather than waste 2 in-game hours dropping it off and coming back. This was very early on for me - like early Summer, year 1, first time playing the game. A swarm of bats overwhelmed me during one of those stupid "cloudy with a chance of bats" events and when I woke up, my irreplaceable Furniture reward, my weapon, and OVER 100 HARDWOOD were gone from my inventory. And I stupidly kept playing and let the game save, meaning I don't get to the the cool carved wooden Bear in my house for that playthrough. Yeah. If you're going to have a penalty like that, items that you literally cannot replace should be flagged as unloseable. Getting 10 days' worth of Hardwood taken from me was also hugely over-the-top, as it delayed me from getting my Horse by - you guess it - another 10 days. Actually, it was closer to 14 days because I hadn't discovered the hidden path yet and was only getting 8 Hardwood per day. For a game that's otherwise so cheerful and laid back, the death penalty comes across as poorly thought out and implemented without thinking some of the possible repercussions through.
I THINK it's supposed to give penalty without perma death ((which I was afraid of tbh)) but floors and the stuff is enough to make someone nope right out the game. Especially some of the items you can lose like on thank you. Sometimes suddenly without warning you get swarmed, you might even panic. That's already not fun enough. Losing the day or such a steep penalty on top of it is just the icing on a crap cake IMHO.
For everybody saying "Just be prepared and don't die" let me share with you a tale. It is Spring of the Second Year. I like to think of myself as an experienced player despite that. At the time I had ~80 hours in the game. I make the most out of each day. I was only level 7 in Combat but pretty good at avoiding bad situations. I had previously entered the Skull Mines and found myself inevitably overwhelmed and unprepared. I learned from that. I came up with a plan involving staircases, bombs, a farm totem, and a buttload of food. I had one goal: Get to floor 25. I waited through 7 unlucky days for 1 shining, beautiful, good luck day. When that day arrived I quickly cared for my animals and set out. I ignored all the cactus fruit and coconuts teasing me on my way to the mines - I had no time for that. I was on a mission. The day started out well. I made it down to floor 11 with very little issue. But from that point things got a little hairy. It started taking me a bit longer to get down. The second I saw a bunch of monsters I said eff it and threw a staircase down. I was getting some sweet loot though so I wasn't complaining. I managed to get to floor 22 but at that point I was out of bombs, out of staircases, and time was running out. Even with a farm totem I didn't want to cut it too close. Luckily I found a hole to drop through. I had over half my health and still had tons of food left! No problem, right? I dropped down to floor 34 or something BAM finished the quest! I had a little over a quarter of a health bar left but was feeling cautious and decided to have a little food just in case. Food equipped. Heading towards my mouth. Behind me a flying dragon snake appears out of no where. It seemed to happen in slow motion I couldn't move my mouse to the eat button faster than it was flying at me. I watched as it hit. And killed me. Quarter of a health bar left. Made no difference. I sat in shock as all my progress was wiped away. I lost some gold but worse than that I lost 26 items. 26 out of 36 items gone. Everything I had found in the mines plus probably my sword? No. Nope. No way. Alt-F4. So please, take your lucky, perfectionist butts out of here. That crap is just not fair.
CA also needs to fix the hitbox for those stupid serpents too. It is a bit unfair that 9 times out of 10, you end up trading hits because the thing can hit you without touching you graphically and it just does way too much damage to be able to hit you that easily.
I dont see the unforgiving on it, yeah I know I sound like everyone else who loves hardcore difficulties... I dont like hardcore difficulties... I just think its fair, because its meant to be dangerous! if it were just another cave with a different layout/backgrounds, people would complain itsj ust a copy/paste of the mines, even if it has new enemies, people would still complain. Of course it has to be more dangerous! you are suposed to have more weapons, tools (like the staircase, which only takes 99 stones to craft) and food to keep you alive, yeah it shouldnt be easy, perhaps tone it down a bit, but not make it any easier on the players... no pain no gain, right?
