60,440 pre-orders, will beta-release flood servers?

Latest count on the pre-order page when you add up all the tiers is 60,440 people who pre-ordered copies of Starbound. Most if not all of those people are chomping at the bit to play this game the exact moment it is released. I saw releases with similar numbers on Steam flood the download servers to the point that you can't even get 50kb/s download rate on 3-4GB games.

Now I know Starbound won't be that big, actually I'm not sure how big Starbound really will be but I expect it to be 1GB at the extreme most considering most content is randomly generated (quotations for actual game size welcome). I fear so many people will be trying to download Starbound at once it will become a massive form of accidental DDOS attack and crash the download server which will end up with lots people crying on their computers. Does Chucklefish have any contingencies in place or are preparations still underway for Beta release? Not asking for date, just wondering if the actual method of Beta release is already worked out and stable.

Steam has dealt with bigger releases before, they usually download fine(if a bit slow), I don't see starbound crashing anything... Maybe people directly downloading from HumbleBundle will crash the servers, but even then it is just a temporary problem.

I don't think Steam would be anything to worry about. As slatwob said, they're probably equipped to handle bigger releases. Worst case scenario, just let the download run overnight.

  4. Steam will not crash if people download by there. Humble Bundle do face a lot of traffic and handles it.

The problem may be if Starbound do have Login Servers, and everyone in masse entering the game, then we have a problem, all i did join in launch with online-servers stuff, everything crashed! Oh dear. /run

Just wait for it to go on SALE after release.

Probably not going to happen steam doesn't generally put games on sale if they are in beta. That being said in my mind its better to get the game now and support the devs when they really need it, besides I think 15 dollars is a fair price, maybe even a bit unfair to the devs its really very cheep right now considering the work going into it.

  7. Sale after launch is not that unlikely. Remember Tiy said game will cost more after launch, what makes the game more likely to make that discounts time to time, like Terraria, Prison Architect one game in Alpha with early access did several times some % savings :p

uh, steam doesn't put games on sale. The devs/owners of the game do.
Besides, they don't really need it. 1,500,000$ + isn't exactly peasant's change. :p (Not to say that the devs don't DESERVE the money cx)
Also, I said "release". Not "beta release". >.>

I kinda hope chucklefish takes advantage of steam's early access program. That way, it'd be easier to roll out updates (assuming they have their own way to roll out updates already) plus it'd be faster to download come release / beta-release.

My mistake I apologize I'm only focusing on beta right now and the actual launch slipped my mind.

Here's hoping the game hits more like $150,000,000 : )

More community + more money = more future development!

  17. Weren't there games that you can "pre-download" [but of course, it won't be a working product until release]? Perhaps they can do that so that overnight downloads won't take too long.

  18. The problem is with this kind of games, we will non-sleep with necessary to be the first in, if they get it on steam, or humble bundle download (that supports torrent) there won't be any issue. The issue is really if there is any kind of auth server in-game itself similar to Minecraft, that can be easily overloaded with thousands of people accessing it at the same time, if the site / forums do already have a lot of trouble with overloads, oh dear!
It's like the Pre-Order page, it gone down minutes after it launched,

This game won't even cause a blip on the Steam bandwidth. People will probably be shocked how small the game is file size wise, but while I do indeed enjoy the art style it is not file size intensive in any way.
