5th & 6th November Progress

  1. Lazer

    Lazer Existential Complex

Reminder that Starbound is confirmed to have

    -Underwater Tokyo
-Ravenous plant people, medieval robots, plasma cowboys
    -Bubble butterfly dash
    -3d printed gear, furniture, etc
    -Flying sad space rabbits
-Buttload of stuff we haven't even seen

I mean I think we tend to see these little nods to popular culture in the updates because the devs know that it will get attention and get the fans going whoop. Scroll through all the updates that are still on page one right now, and you'll see 1 obvious and maybe 1 or 2 more subtle references, tops.

I am perfectly okay with weekly updates. With the beta looming, I see no reason to try and force a daily update if there isn't much content to show off. Certain people demand their daily screenshots, but they can live without them I'm sure.

How is it odd? We've already seen more than enough to know that the game is ambitious and big. We've seen how the procedural generation works, we've seen space travel and the multitude of planets/moons and what not that we can encounter, we've seen the variety of dungeons, weapons, gear, and tech, and we all know how the game is going to work by now. I'd say all of that is pretty ambitious for a small team of devs that are scattered all over the globe. Is all of that suddenly derailed just because they have an homage to a classic sci-fi game? Seems to me that some people here are grossly exaggerating the impact of one tech ability.

lol I like the ball morph, reminds me a bit of sonic. Maybe the ball morphs could have varying physics, like one could be bouncy ball, one could be speed ball, one could be floating on water. :p

Stop stealing metroid morph ball lol.

I do see how everything gets reused in different ways and it was only a couple of seconds showing the transform, so it depends on the context of how its used, and we are only going to know that when we can play it, alot of what is coming out at the moment is peoples frustration with beta and lack of any concrete information, although I also realize things also change in beta and as more stuff is added towards the completion of the game. As an artist I was always under the impression that as a painting is created and nearly completed there comes a time where any more just makes it wrong and can spoil the painting, so its a case of knowing when enough is enough. I do still believe this game can be great but I will wait and see if the beta delivers on some of the ideas that held my attention.

People will complain about anything - "HEY This feature you added that I LIKE looks and acts just like a feature from ANOTHER GAME THAT I LIKE, lemme just COMPLAIN about it real quick"
Anyone out there that likes Metroid likes the morphball, and if you're a fan of the morphball, complaining about this is just trolling. this wasn't some sly, underhanded attempt at copyright infringement, they even called it a morphball, its just a throwback to an older franchise that WE ALL LOVED. :D so YAY right?
I'd *like* daily updates, or even bi-daily, but i'm not that invested in them that weekly updates wouldn't be out of the question, it'd probably save me from wasting time checking the forums as much lol.

I think it's unfair for developers to have to deal with "This game made _____ (morphing into a ball) first, therefore everyone who copies them can't think."
Because of this, popular pioneers ruin an entire concept for everyone that comes after them. This is true in pretty much every single media.
So yeah, lay off. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make a game have more variety in features that make sense.

    Edit: sorta ninja'd?

Weekly updates make sense. You're cleared hot.

EDIT: Forgot to write that I love the Metroid reference with the morphball tech!

I can't believe that people are actually getting mad about a reference to another game within an indie game. That's basically an inherent property of indie games, they include references to other games within them. Take terraria for example, which has countless items that directly reference other games. (ex: Hero's clothes vanity set, creeper vanity set, etc.) Even games from AAA titles have easter eggs inside them that are references to other games. Skyrim had a reference to Minecraft, I've been told that COD has a Zelda reference inside it, and there are many more. Its not directly copying the other game, its taking a piece of a beloved game and representing it in a new way to make players of your game happy. Almost every indie game I've played does it in some way. I mean, take super meat boy for example, it doesn't just reference other games, it directly takes characters out of those games and uses them for its own purposes, but nobody ever gets angry about that, in fact people were happy about it! The point is that if you're going to play an indie game, you have to accept that there may be references to other games within it, and if you can't accept that, the just don't use whatever it is you don't like within the game. Whatever you do, don't try and make it worse for others by complaining and making the devs feel like the community doesn't like references.

If you want to get technical, it's a copy of Metroid sure. Then Metroid must have copied it from someone/somewhere else. Such as let's say the first sphere/ball ever created? Why would Metroid copy that?!??! I protest!

Anyway the biggest issue I see with it is that the florans ball should definitely be more plantlike. I understand the one shown is probably a prototype so there will be changes I'm sure. Hoping that each race will have their own unique flare to their abilities.

Weekly updates? That ruins my hope that beta will be here soon. With updates every day or every couple days there's always the chance one will be announcing the beta release. With weekly updates, I infer no beta anytime soon. 2013 doesn't have many weeks left.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid and reading too much into it. I just wanna play it.

    Sigh.

Hell, I don't even LIKE Metroid and I loved the morphball.

...so there's that. Bouncing around in my tech castle like a retarded pokemon is gonna be awesome.
