5 Real Planets Way Weirder Than Anything in Science Fiction

I was browsing Cracked, as many of you do, when I noticed they were running an article relevant to Starbound. I think some of these could be put to use in the game.

Why not have planets so dark you can barely see in front of you even at the surface?
Why not have planets that are almost entirely magma oceans and constantly spew horrendous jets out into space?
Why not have planets with frequent earthquakes that cause cave-ins and damage to structures?
Why not have planets with strange, erratic weather patterns such as raining glass shards sideways at 4,000 MPH?

Things that aren't mentioned in the article but also really exist:
Planets that have oceans of liquid methane. You might want to think twice about using guns, flamethrowers, or anything that might put off a spark.
Gassy planets that are so dense you can almost walk on them, but will sink unless you have the right equipment.
Gliese 581 c, a tidally locked planet that is lava on one half, and permafrost on the other half, with a thin band of habitable zone in between.

What other odd planets do you know of?

i think SB has potential to have some REALLY cool planet variations. I just hope the devs are daring enough to do so.

If not- i hope modders will be given the tools to go crazy with planet generation. My most anticipated feature for SB is he hardcore modifications the community will eventually create.

What about a planet like Crematoria, from "the chronicles of Riddick", that rotates fast and, when it is daytime, you get burned if you are on the surface. That would be cool.

what if the planets were generated big enough so that you could walk from day to night? In that case, it would be possible to have planets just like Crematoria where you have to run from daylight.

Ocean planets are currently bugged due to generation issues. That's why we don't have lava oceans.

As for "Glass Shards" some snow planets will have shards of ice falling from the sky.

As I mentioned in another thread, some planets are not realistic even to the Starbound universe (Due to restrictions currently in place, etc.) For instance, planets with an underground ice / cold biome... will suddenly stop that biome in favor of a magma core.

Similarly, tentacle planets don't have a molten purple goo core, or bio-core.

We should first work on these things before anything major.

Can't happen in Starbound with the engine in its current state. Daylight is a single global value on the planet. A simple change could make it a reality, though: all they need to do is have the daylight value sent to the player be offset by a sine wave. Fairly simple math, really.

The great thing about StarBound is it's highly flexible. I'm pretty sure modders will make even more bizarre planets then mention in the post

Actually, that wouldn't be cool, that'd be hot.

But i get what you mean. :p

Atmosphere wouldn't have any oxygen (because, well, it would burn off on those oceans), and if wtmoshpere was alo methane or some other "flammable" gas, then you could make flamethrower from oxygen tank

Planets with toxic air. You would need a Survival System to go there and without one you'll have that poison effect forever. So you could go on there but for a very very short time.
I also want more severe weather effects. Rock-rain and dust-snow! Come on.
Another thing I want would be planets that have one ore only, like how there is one planet in real life that is made up of diamonds. I don't see this being in vanilla since it's basically cheating, but they could only be in a special new sector and extremely extremely rare.

Diamond-based planets could be in the X sector, and only the very core of the planet be composed of diamond. I find that after about Delta, diamonds become pretty much useless.

Honestly, while i do like SB sci-fi/fantasy approach. i wouldnt mind seeing a mod where gearing up for a planet is important. That would be a whole different game though, as rampant civilizations wont make sense in a game where a majority of the planets are inhabitable.

If the game is balanced around planets having a diamond core it wouldnt be a problem. It shoud be endgame or a point in the game where you need as much diamond as you can dig, whether it be for tools or luxury.

My biggest fear for this game is wasted potential. I believe in the admins and their creativity, after all that's why this game has outsold so many modern copy paste games, but my biggest fear is that there is all this potential, and we will get boring, bland items and scenery because nobody wants to take the risk.

I love all of the ideas in this thread that you guys have made and would like to see them implemented into the game, I just hope the admins feel the same way. Damn wouldn't it be awesome to have a hidden base on an almost completely uninhabited planet?

They wont take certain risk because this game is suppose to be casual and cater to a broad audience.

Mods is what will make this game reach its true potential. The more mod support from the Devs the better this game will be.

We need more reasons to explore these planets, not more reasons to avoid them. Challenging planets sound cool, but with the current system most people are going to beam down once, look around/die then leave and never visit another planet like it. Planets need to be as rewarding as they are difficult, but right now every planet in a given level has the same ores in a high enough density to make going to the more difficult ones a waste of effort.

Junk Planet: planet is covered in layers of junk tech. Mostly robotic or cybernetic looking monsters. Humanoid threats would be restricted to scavenger types. Might be a good place to look for tech chests but exposed electric currents or molten metal in places would make the planet difficult to traverse below the surface.
