A place for my various Starbound musings, normally I draw illustrations, but thanks to this game and its high degree of moddability I have been spriting, something which I will need to practice more often. To start off Ill show a bit of custom armour Ive made for the game, at first it was more of a vanity set however since I ended up making guns to go with it Ill eventually aim to make a full armory mod. Anyway the next few images and pixel works are of my ArCon system (Armoured Recon) To start off I did a quick concept sketch page, wanted to aim for essentially a armoured space and EV suit with a degree of flexibility. Wanted to avoid power armor due to its over-saturation in media. Next was spriting up the design still its a bit new to me so some issues popped up such as trying to cram too much detail into a tiny sprite, also contrast issues, my pixels aren't dark enough in most places and its a bit muddy and hard to see. Stuff Ill have to fix later. Also included in the screenshot are two guns I sprited and added to the game (and yes both have a working secondary fire attack) Also here on the chestplate some details are hidden due to my Apex characters hairstyle cropping through weirdly. And just recently over the new years break I decided to pick up practice on digital painting and did a rendition of my character in my custom armour set.
Just re-posting this here from another topic. Heres a Human APC/IFV I sprited (visually influenced by a Ratle IFV) Idea is this is made to be a possible player driven vehicle tech, could be modified from the existing car tech in the game. And so a lot of the frames here are based on the fame/sprite sheet for the car. Also the turret (not the gun though) and wheels I respectively canabalised from the penguin tank and car. Anyway this sprite is open to use if anyone feels brave enough to try importing it into the game or such, I just ask that credit is given if you do so. In addition heres some sprites I made for my ArCon arsenal which I will compile into a full armor and weapon set mod when I know the games more complete. All the following guns Ive sprited in reference to the games existing gun parts, these sprites are divided into 3 segments meaning they can be incorporated into the procedurally loading gun system and be compatible with randomized gun parts of their respective families. The black and white guns are more of the unique weapons of the ArCon stuff and are just one whole piece. Zenith Revolver Pariah Battle Rifle Longinus AMR Warden Minigun (WIP) Might make into a LMG if animating proves to be too much of a pain.
Update on some more content, got the minigun in game and completed its sprite, also I altered the ArCon armours chest sprite to more closely match my concepts and illustrations. Warden Minigun (Still need to animate the barrels for firing, I tried off of a super vague and bad tutorial to no success)
Just finished spriting this and added it into the game today, a piledriver weapon, base template is a spear. Named the Cestus after the Roman gladiatorial gauntlets. Cestus in idle mode. Cestus releasing its lance. Testing the Cestus, which emits some particles, effects and projectiles. Next I need to figure out how to make it proficient at breaking terrain and walls down, make it into a demolitionists tool as well as a weapon. UPDATE: So I figured out to make a custom explosion based off the zbomb (black iron bomb) toned down the blast radius size and particle effects, and it works a charm, the Cestus can now smash down trees and punch holes through terrain and walls, it can also make tunnels quite well. Also got rid of half the projectile effects in favor of it.
At this current time I dont feel the content is ready for release just yet, some things still need fine tuning. Also I want to look into using LUA scripting to possibly make the weapons and armour do more advanced functions and such.
Just some updates, been busy with other art stuff and games lately so Ive neglected Starbound a little. The Warden minigun is now animated ingame when shot, heres the sprite increased in size for display. Also I've made a new ArCon armor item, the Ballista munitions launcher, a multi-rocket launcher that fires rockets containing cluster grenades. It should be noted this launcher and all previously seen ArCon weapons are essentially high rare to legendary items in terms of their balance and power and are intended to be late game elite gear, and so in relation to this when the mod is complete they will be items that require the player to really grind and work hard towards, since these items will not be crafted in anyway, rather the idea is a type of token system will be utilized where you purchase these items. And these tokens will be dropped from existing mid to high tier bosses and possibly some new foes and bosses I might add. Relating to the ArCon gear and armor there is intended to be randomized and random spawn outposts and facilities belonging to this faction on planets, these locations will have different guardians, one type will be the concepted enemy below that I illustrated, essentially a towering tank of a soldier, this behemoth will wield their own minigun one handed while in the other hand will be piledriver, functioning as essentially a 'dungeon boss' . Design esthetic plays on a reverse of the art style of base characters (large heads and small bodies)
