Today, myself and another player noticed that seeds were removed from the 3D printer. We're not sure if this is a bug or an unmentioned change. This sucks. To be honest, I think the 3D printer should be able to do more stuff, not less. Make it so most things are printable, as long as they have a cost of some sort. Make it part money sink, part convenience - it's not like you can print something before you've found/made it, in any case. Similarly, make it so most things can be "refined" into pixels (e.g. component parts). Limiting it to things with value makes it so we can't just dump a stack of cobblestone blocks into the refinery and make bank (thereby discouraging strip mining,) but at the same time, it lets us get rid of a bunch of the crap that gets collected over the course of a journey (thereby encouraging exploration.) If necessary, call it a replicator rather than a 3D printer, but make it SOMEHOW more useful than it is.
I whole-heartedly agree. The fact that you can convert ores to pixels just means you should be able to use pixels to convert everything else. it should be extremely inefficient, but you should be able to replicate anything!
Yes. Replicator. "Tea. Earl Gray. Hot." I'd like to be able to break down crappy weapons / old weapons too, maybe with an upgrade to the refinery? Or, another way to keep old craptastic weapons from cluttering boxes is to NEED the lower tiers to make the higher tiers, like with the tools; pickaxe, hunting bow, crafting table, etc.
I think I'd prefer being able to break anything down over needing old stuff to upgrade items, though. Requiring old stuff encourages hoarding - you never know WHAT item you're going to need to keep around, which means you've got a bunch of useless crap sitting around.
That's really the point, though. Hoarding is fine - what we don't want to do is encourage hoarding or make it required.
I agree that non-living things should all be printable. You shouldn't be able to print seeds, but you should be able to print a cooking table.
That's why I suggested changing it to a replicator. You're right that it doesn't make sense to "3D Print" seeds, but I really liked that functionality when it worked.
I certainly appreciated being able to clone seeds, but I realise it sort of breaks the logic of the 3D printer. There's a lot of other logic breaking things in the game of course, so no reason we couldn't add one more. I like the idea of loading the 3D printer with recipes for, say, desert biome seeds before beaming down to a desert world and so on.
You can still scan seeds, though they don't show up. There's other items that scan and no longer / never showed up in the printer. The Oil Lantern you can get from villages is one of them.
