Problem: Storage space is extremely limited. Throwing away large stacks of low-worth items and crap weapons can be painful and frustrating. Problem: The 3D printer can't print hardly anything. Opinion: The 3D printer should be able to print anything in the game. Suggestion: Give every item a point value, let every item be 3D printed, and let the 3D printer double as a recycler, giving back a fraction of the point value of an item dumped into it, even if it's already in the recipe list. If a crafting table still takes 35 wood and 200 pixels and assuming wood costs 100, the crafting table should have a point value of something like 3700 pixels to 3D print, and one would have had to be recycled in the past for a fraction of its worth. If wood costs 25, the crafting table would cost 1075 to 3D print. The inventory's trash icon then remains as is as a last resort for when you don't have access to your ship and want to pick up something you've never seen before when your inventory is full. Additional: I have several hundred food items I've farmed. Throwing away food is an abominable concept in a game with starvation. I have hundreds of decorative items I've already scanned once. I have dozens of crap weapons dropped by various baddies. I have thousands upon thousands of units of earthy materials that I can't bring myself to throw away. My ship is a hideous amalgam of crates and lockers that make it difficult to find anything. Additional: People who go monster hunting as their primary activity can still eventually have enough points to build a house without mining, assuming mining is boring to them. It also allows people who avoid monsters like the plague enough pixels to craft their tier-upping items without hunting. This widens the play-styles that will find enjoyment of the game. It also allows for certain food items you don't have the seeds for to be made for use in things like a Copper Key Pie (which crashes the game). Additional: The pixels one gets might be used in conjunction with this suggestion about weapon disassembly. Additional: This grievance was first discussed in this thread.
Clarification: When you've found a kiwi in a chest, but not growing on a planet, so you've had no seed, no matter how many you seem to go to. And I still don't know how to make sugar.
You and I have the same problem. We can't spare to waste anything, even in a video game. I don't know if the 3D printer should be able to print anything, but I think weapons would be fine. On top of that, we need to be able to expand the starship for more room, and have a stable place to sell items.
A good trait to have as far as I'm concerned. I don't see why not, if it can print something at 1000 and only gives you back, say 125 or 250 for recycling it, it wouldn't be a source of infinite pixels. Agreed. What would be very nice is if you could actually build your starship like you did your castle/fortress/boring-old-house surfaceside. I'd love to have a crewed space ship six stories high that I can't see the far end of at 1080p and travels with me. That brings up another point. Right now, all that the engine upgrades do is make later sectors available. It would be nice if you could upgrade lots of sections of the ship, making it take less fuel to go places, among perhaps other things. A big ship might require more fuel to go between systems than a small ship did, after all.
Agreed with pretty much everything. I'd also like to add that it feels as though the cost of reproducing scanned items is a tad high. Or at least rename the "cheap light", which costs 500 pixels to reproduce. That's not cheap by ANYONE'S standards...
Well, it might feel cheaper if you could dump a few stacks of dirt in there and get some pixels to print one.
Update: Starbound has been updated. Problem: This has not been implemented. Additional: This is in multiple mods. People want it and it isn't hard to do. Suggestion: Implement it.
Update: Starbound is now on Furious Koala. Whining: Come on, guys! Get on this! I don't want to have to keep waiting for my mods to be updated just to recycle all my dry sand!
Problematic Inquiry: Doesn't this recycling almost eliminate the need for ANY storage? Problem: Maybe If you wouldn't horde EVERYTHING you wouldn't run out of space. Condescending Suggestion: Create a large room or a cave perhaps where you can store mounds upon mounds of your useless junk.
Actually, I have a fully-customizable-ship mod which means my ship is roughly the size of olympus mons and is just full of chests and crates and useless bits of fluff I've plopped down to make it feel like somebody actually lives there, along with three levels of various farmland. I have a desert room. Specifically, a room where I've made an entire desert, complete with an oasis (no water, of course). But yeah, I want to eliminate the need for storage for worthless things and keep it for things that you want to keep handy. Your tools, your favorite weapons that you yourself have crafted, a stash of food, some flags... Yes, I know that getting to print everything means one never has to hunt or farm anything, and for balance reasons printing titanium or other advanced crafting materials would likely be disproportionately expensive compared to mass, BUT being able to RECYCLE everything into pixels really needs to be a thing. I want to go mining for dirt, get two or three full stacks of sand, come back, and suddenly have 3k pixels just from tossing the sand in the recycler, even if it takes time per item to do so.
I don't believe you should be able to make ANYTHING from the 3D pritner. Furniture sure and some tools. Weapons, Armor and food nah. Also i do support the recycllng idea.
Additionally, it would give Really, the recycling was the main point I wanted to catch on here. The printing anything should have been a separate suggestion. I really would like it if ores at least were printable. It really irks me when I'm one away from making something I want and have to wander around on three different planets before I find any. Yes, that happened to me. It's annoying.
So in games like this and minecraft, I think there should be some way to store every item you come across, even if it requires some investment to do so. I've designed systems of storage for everything and it functioned fine. Anytime there was an overabundance of some item (like 4 double chests or more in minecraft), a mass storage facility for that item could be created if desired. This game does have alot more items, but the 3D printer seems to allow a nice way to reduce the display item count so you don't have to go through 10 small chests trying to stack things. EDIT: I say this is true so long as they reduce the price of scanning items. Honestly, though, if 256 item chests were avaliable, even if expensive to make, they would assist a lot in stacking. You could store all your weapons you come across in weeks in one large chest, your decorative items in another, and functional items in another. Even if a certain item has only 16 types or so (like sapplings or seeds) one 256 chest can fit 16 of those groups which is more than enough. You can have one multi-group chest for the whole game somewhere in your starship. Not to mention you won't have to search for items that can stack with eachother.
In the modpack for Minecraft I use, there's a Matter-Energy network set up that stores items as data on cards, but no matter how much dirt you put into it, dirt just shows up once with a number indicating how much is in the system. I would take an M.E. Network over the individual chests any day.
you can create almost anything with the printer you just have to scan them first, only the things that need blue prints you cant print them until you unlocked them. last thing portable printer makes it so you can craft small printable items for cheaper plus you get nano stove witch is better then the space heater.
Did you figure out how to find sugar? Just checking since I didn't see anyone answer (or missed it). I like the recycling idea. My biggest issue with the printer is cost. I know people are gonna argue that with the ore to pixels machine pixels are no big deal but I don't like the way the printer in general works at the moment. I think this could be a good change.
Definite +1 to recycling. And for those who are wondering/don't know, sugar is harvested from sugar cane which can be found growing in desert biomes (in case you wanted to farm them). Hope that clarifies that.
I love this idea. Only scanned items should be available in the 3D printer. Scanning should cost nothing as the item is destroyed in the process. Scanning any item should add to a resource pool for the printer to use. Printing an item then subtracts from the pool. The value/scarcity of the item affects its value when scanned as well as the cost of printing it. Living objects should not be printable, sorry but printing seeds and food should not happen. They could add in a tissue culture laboratory work station for the disassembling and creation of plants, seeds, and even animals.
You have to grow sugarcane, which gives you a sugarcane seed and a pile of sugar when harvested. I think you can find them on deserts.
I disagree with this. I like 3D printing as it is. If you have something logged already, destroy any others you have and only print one when you need it. And destroy all your past weapons, armor, and dirt from planets you'll never return to.
