Bug/Issue 360 controller not recognized

I'm trying to use a third party wired xbox 360 controller and the options for gamepad placement tile indicator and controller rumble are greyed out. The controller doesn't do anything in game either.
This happens every time I try and run the game under OS X 10.11.6.
When I use the same controller in Windows it works fine and has rumble support in game.
I can use this controller in other games under steam on OS X 10.11.6 just fine.
Windowed vs full screen doesn't affect it.

I'm also having the same problem, which is so frustrating cause I love playing this game through the controller
