Looks good. But I have some regrets.

Modders can set you number of sectors? If someone make a mod like star trek, star war of something, can use 5, 7 or more sectors?

    Awesome news guys!
The game was REALLY good before, but sadly nothing you can play for too long..
But i still wonder why you're still not doing more class specefic things, like skills you can earn or lvl during your adventure or more different stuff each class can do. This would make the game so freaking awesome and it would guarantee more than 20 + hours of playing.
And one thing that could be added is something like a kind of special equipment, like you from Terraria. Items that will give you some kind of a spell.. Going on an adventure or on the hunt for monsters isn't always that awesome, because you just need to mash your atk button!

But still, these changes definitely will be amazing!

I think it's odd how some people are getting upset as though this is an mmo ... with a creative / pvp mode ruining the community somehow. Don't like those sectors being used primarily, go to another server?

Though in all honestly, I would prefer them not to be sectors so much as gameplay modes. As it is the pvp sector will be completely off limits to me, because I don't like pvp. I won't have any interest in going to the 'safe' sector, either. Yet, it irks me that there are two whole SECTORS in the game that are there but I can't touch because they aren't how I want to play. What's the thought process behind it? why not just have modes, like minecraft or mmos, where you choose y/n to pvp and if you want creative mode you can have it?

though I don't yet know what the safe sector offers, so it may well be nothing like I'm imagining! I know I never have interest in pvp though, haha. So it doesn't bother me all THAT much. Not enough to declare it's going to ~~ruin the game~~! All in all I'm very glad to finally see some content updating on the horizon. I was beginning to get a little worried about the team falling into a dev slog. :T

In concept this seems amazing, but I am cautiously optimistic. Please understand that amazing ideas like these can go wrong......

    Love how it sounds.
The nonlinear progression through the game I think is a great idea.
Right now it's just: Farm to summon the boss, Kill the boss, Go to the next sector, now repeat it for 3 times. And i don't really like it that much.
"We’re building the game with 3 main paths of progression that branch off later on. Farming, adventuring and building. We want players to be able to advance through the game whilst doing whatever they enjoy most." This is just AWESOME, now instead of farming dungeons killing guys in order to aquire pixels and craft whatever i want i can just do whatever i want to get pixels and it's just fantastic.
Keep it up, you're doing a great job with this game and i can't wait to see what kind of updates you'll bring to us :)

P.s. Sorry for my bad grammar and english in general, it's not my main language D:

Will the progression paths be mutually exclusive?
I have a tendency to build rather large farms, I enjoy building large structures/complexes/towns, and I do enjoy my adventuring.

I'm hoping I can progress along all 3 main paths.

Absolutely love what I'm reading. Definitely stoked for the quests, it gives the universe some life to it with races gathered at the same spot whilst occupying the player with quests.

Not having any sectors either is a god send. Every time I replayed Starbound the overwhelming amount of stuff to get to proceed (in a repetetive manner too) was a daunting task.

Looking forward to further updates, godspeed!

    SivCorp Parsec Taste Tester

From the sound of it, this "beta" is nothing more then a field test for mechanics that will be added to a completely different structured game...

So I guess it really was an alpha. :cautious:

I'm still game. Bring it on!

Such a misleading title. I thought the game actually updated. Oh well, I'll be happy when this actually goes in. Some time around when ship upgrades go in, I assume?

I have been curious about this as well, because on one hand, Tiy mentioned that it is not an actual skill tree, but that it is more of a game play mechanic, which imo means that if you achieve X landmark in your current profession, you can advance to the next tier of that profession, and then start over on tier 1 of a new profession, hopefully while still retaining your progress on the last one. However, there was a statement in the AMA that has me worried this may not be the case..... "It's unlikely we'll ever have stats. You'll unlock different gameplay mechanics as you play that will enable your character to access tech and skills not available to players that have chosen a different route"...... So I am waiting for clarification on this as well. In either case, it may add replay value for new characters, but I would prefer to be a master of all trades myself.

But I also don't expect all the answers, its just one of many floating around.

I hope the residents recognize the quality of the materials that go into making their housing and pay more rent accordingly.

    Me?

I'm going to cut down every tree and mow down every animal. I will cover entire landscapes with filthy, cheaply made housing with rolling black outs, no clean water, and constant food shortages. Entire planets will be converted to metropolises of crime, despair, and death.

Definitely excited for all of this. Should be really fun to finally start exploring various planets in search of cool items like I have been but with more of a purpose. Can't wait to see all this implemented!

"We’re building the game with 3 main paths of progression that branch off later on. Farming, adventuring and building. We want players to be able to advance through the game whilst doing whatever they enjoy most."

Am I the only one concerned that the implementation of various "main paths" is going to be hard to balance and/or end up diluted with no real difference?

On the plus side of the announcement: outposts, new gameplay paradigm, a singular map system, and outposts!

EDIT: Will those branches be mod-able?
What if I want to be a bounty hunter (adventure subgroup)? Unlocking a level in Bounty Hunting allows me to accept contracts from people across the galaxy to eliminate/capture targets. :D
If I get good enough in farming, would that grant boons to other things? Like terraforming a planet to be more agriculturally friendly (faster crop growth or higher yields)?
Through building, could I maybe become a real estate tycoon? For example, letting me advertise for my housing or set rates for families that move in?
