That sounds pretty cool and would make it a very realistic farming experience, requiring the nutrients of their preferred source to grow, but it also would get very tedious very fast swapping out between liquids if you have a large farm, not to mention remembering what plant requires what source. It would probably be better to leave it with water for every plant, or at the very least allowing any water source to grow a plant at just a slower rate, but a preferred source would grow it faster.

Hey can you make it so you don't spawn on the same planet every time you make a new character since i love exploring chests and all mine are already looted

Basically I am suprised about people complaining about watering because of this.
You can easily plant a farm on a planet which rains constantly and never have to worry about watering.

I like your point but isn't plain water just too easy to find for a universal plant growth source? Maybe healing water instead so it requires at least a tiny bit of effort.

Also, can we have wonderful but rare healing water rain?

I just thought about that there was talk about multiple different ways of progressing in the game:
    adventure, explore, quests?
    explore, loot, housing
    farming, crops, making dinner

if these three were to have kind of the same weight on the game, then auto-irrigation systems would ruin the game and render it too easy.

I just don't really understand why the urge to copy realism from our world into a high-tech society. Realism is not what most seek when we play, otherwise why would we even "log off" from our realm? :) Make it a projection of our reality with added fun, i.e. ban the watering can and add something unique!

Common devs, you have more imagination than this. It's the same drama as using picks to mine when the matter collector became obsolete back in 2013 and 2014. Is there nothing bloody better than a WATERING CAN in the starbound universe, where technology is so much ahead??

Watering cans are for harvest moon & terraria, just like mining picks...[DOUBLEPOST=1437513692][/DOUBLEPOST]
Well let us seek realism in an advanced society without automation :)

This is great and I've been using it. Now, if we just had some reason to grow food....

Really loving that block-to-water interaction bit. It could finally mean that liquids actually make sense and are more lively and cool than obstructive and irritating.

Call your estate agent, the ocean planet is your next perfect Investment!
Ok, don't get it?Build a platform slightly beneath the ocean surface, and let both ends leaking in water, and have drains in the structure.
Ocean planet is a huge automatic watering farm!

I would be damned if they saw this and prohibit sea water irrigation
Guys lets grow crops with sea water like in the real world(so not ture)![DOUBLEPOST=1437515346][/DOUBLEPOST]

    oh~~~~nonono! oceans!

Uh, nonono. Oceans won't work. It has to be rainwater or the watering can.

I heard there were some salt-tolerant plants that can grow if irrigated with seawater. There was a major experiment along those lines in Sonora IIRC. Not sure how many *edible* plants are that salt-tolerant, but it certainly opens up options.

    Looks pretty nice!

I really love the idea of using ddifferent liquids to get strange results, what would happen if you water your plants with liquid erchius? :O

Also some rare kind of plants would need to be grown on special soil, with a certain liquid for it to grow, that'd be nice.

Also i'm thinking Sayter will be either very thrilled, or very annoyed by this :D

Why are you assuming that the glimpse they've given us is the sum total of how the system will work forever and ever? That mentality has never held true throughout this game's development. Pretty much every "simple" system has eventually gotten more advanced options devoted to it. The Lantern Stick isn't the be-all-end-all of personal illumination. The pick isn't the be-all-end-all of digging. Why do you think the watering can will be the be-all-end-all of farming hydration?

Everything in this game started with a simplified version and then expanded. That's how development works.

hopefully there will be a automatically water system later on because if you make a big farm like i do this will be frustrating after a long period of time don't get me wrong its nice to have it early and mid game but later on it needs a way to be more automated

I do like the necessity of water now, though. Much more survival element to have to have water for food.

This will be interesting to work with, I've been wanting more to do with my crops. I just don't want any creatures able to destroy my crops in Starbound, I grow plants in my own garden and some thing has eaten my only ghost pepper plant i was growing and some of my flowers have been eaten as well would really hate having such problems put into my game.

Nicely done guys! It's another step to awesomeness.
Since we're also talking about farming, I would also like to suggest.... Fertilizers.
Fertilizers:To sped up the process of farming, harvest more quantities of vegetation, or even gain something unique on a planted seed.
Fertilizers ingredients can be obtained from other mobs, or gathered on certain biomes.

If the plants can be made to grow whenever it rains (even when not on screen) then this encourages picking a good planet for your plantations. :)
If not then I'm gussing you might wanna build a huge water tank and make a mechanism to let a bit of water on the soil when you press a button.
