Great! This means that I won't have to walk around in uber-cool armor with a wooden stick coming out of my back.
The normal lantern on a stick was always a bit too dim to actually be of any real use, but still basically the main thing I always end up using regardless. I like the addition of new-er level "Lanterns on a stick," but personally I feel the brightness scale from the gif image shown is a little too much; it removes the need for flares, as short life span as they are, and torches when you're not in an actual dungeon... And the need for flashlights, especially if you get a flash light in a different colour to shine green, red, and so forth.
The Lantern on a Stick & Flashlight remove the need for Flares. I never use Flares, never see anytime I ever need them.
Honestly I always prefer to use a flamethrower or photon pistol for my lighting needs. I used to have a really awesome photon pistol that rapid-fired and it's shots bounced around so it was crazy awesome for seeing in the dark, especially in caves.
Am I the only one who cries a little at the title because it reminds me my favorite author of the Discworld novels died recently? Too soon man, too soon.
Yea I agree there's almost no need for flares... Flares need a buff so they actually have a use. But, with the new lantern on a sticks, it would still have almost no point anyways; I personally think the third lantern on a stick has too high of a brightness. Otherwise, the lantern on a sticks look pretty nice in my opinion.
Great to see more back light items, I'd really like to see back light items design for each race though.
If you ever find a gun called a "Lightning Coil", ya REALLY oughta give that dude a try for lighting uses. My fav use for it is lighting up the bottom of deep amounts of Liquid to search the proximity for Ores that'd be damn hard to spot to know about otherwise. True, one can pump out the Liquid too, but what if it turned out that there wasn't anything worthwhile down there afterwards... checking first can be a time saver.
Man, I miss that hunger bar... I used to have a reason to farm and collect seeds... Now... I don't.[DOUBLEPOST=1432333792][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh, and for the sake of making things modern and space-like, and all. Can we have something less, I dunno, primitive than wooden torches as the most abundant light source in the known universe? I propose a 1x1 tile light source that is different for each race. Could be crafted from copper/iron and bio samples for all I care. The Humans could have a light yellow diode, Apex could have a light blue tesla arc, Avians could have a pulsing/rotating red crystal fragment, Florans could have a sprout with a glowing green node at the end, Glitch could have fireflies in jars (it just fits medieval times) the Hylotl could have a more pronounced blue water orb (would be simple tech for them to make water glow and keep surface tension(not to get too technical)) and the Novakids could have a glowing orange rail-spike that just sticks into most surfaces. Maybe unlocked with the nano stove and all that jazz?[DOUBLEPOST=1432334053][/DOUBLEPOST] Or, we could just placate their deity-like wrath with large amounts of virgins and breakfast pastries so they keep making this epic game...
There´s Cheap Lights, which pretty much replace torches once the Portable Pixel Printer is obtained, as they only cost 100 pixels, essentially meaning that, at that point, most enemies will drop enough to craft at least one light each. There are also Ship Lights for the earlier game, as you can scan them, and the various furniture items found in structures.
Thanks for that informative recap of the game I've been playing for the last few years. 1x1 tile and racially themed costing something other than pixels is what I had in mind which is why I stated specifically those attributes.
Wait, is this completely replacing the lantern stick ? I like the design of the current one, but wouldn't mind seeing a more futuristic themed alternative as well.
I still want a gun light. Like... a flashlight. Duct taped to the gun. Too high tech...? =P In game terms it could be a random weapon property.
Gun Light's in-game already in a awesomely sci-fi way, it's called the Lightning Coil. Though a Flashlight at the end of my Rocket Launcher would be spiffy... Edit: Or, another spiffy idea... a Laser Pointer for targeting...
The implementation I would like to see is to either have one carriable light per material, or just to make the current lights equippable to the back slot
