20 core fragment ores

I started playing the game again the other day and noticed that my previous saves had been deleted, this wasn't an issue as I wanted to start again anyway. I went through with the intro mission (the graduation ceremony and leaving Earth) and was given the mission of exploring the planet my ship is orbiting. I beamed down, explored for a bit, then SAIL tells me about the archaic energy source and I'm given the mission to find it. I find the core fragment ores and I get a message to say that SAIL believes I should need about 20 of them, but the mission doesn't update and instead I'm still being told to find the energy source. I carry on anyway and mine 20 core fragment ores but the game doesn't register this and I'm unable to use them. I can't really proceed much further in the game until I've done this quest and repaired the thrusters, which is annoying. Is there any way to fix this?

If S.A.I.L. prompts you to find the "ancient energy source" you're supposed to find the ancient warp gate, which is now located on your starting planet.
Just take your 20 core fragments with you to activate the gate.
It will take you to the outpost, where you'll get your next quest to repair your ship.

Thank you that's helpful! Are there any easy ways of finding the gate or do I just have to dig around?

Can confirmed that this will work. If you already know what to do you can outright ignore Sail and the quest should skip ahead once you are in the outpost. The only thing you would lose out on is Sail special messages about creating fire and killing trees.

Should be on the surface of the planet. I can't guarantee this but on like ~5 characters I had made it always been to the right of the spawn point. Maybe I just been lucky though.

I'm pretty sure you're right I think you find the gate on the first planet you spawn on.
