I was wondering if 2 people could use one copy. My sister might want to play it too, but we don't want to buy 2. I imagine she won't be playing it as much as I will. Can we both at least play together locally with 1 copy?

EDIT: We have found out that multiplayer works like Minecraft. I learned how to portforward, so we can play together now.

  2. If it's one copy on same PC you can take turns, if you get on Steam you can only login on 1 place at time. When it comes to this the person you play with also needs its copy you know...

There's no splitscreen multiplayer or anything. But if you take turns playing, that's fine. If your sister won't be playing much, just let her play when she asks to.

I've been meaning to ask... If you only use the Steam key for the game, will you be able to give the DRM-version to a friend?

One thing you should consider, if you give a copy to your friend and then he gives it to his friend and so on, eventually everyone will have it for free.

If Starbound does not make money you will not see more impressive games such as it, just regular crappy games, like a lot of mmos we see these days.

Server's have the option of weather or not they check for CD-Keys.
So in thoery, there's no reason why you both couldn't play it if you stuck to certain servers or just hosted your own game.

I'm pretty sure that the non-steam version will require you to login with a Starbound account, similar to a minecraft account.

But, if you and your sister want to play, here is what you can do:
    1. Download Starbound through steam on one computer.
    2. Exit steam
    3. Start steam on the other computer.
    4. Download Starbound.
    5. Set that computer to offline mode.
    6. Start steam again on the first computer.

This way you will be logged into the same Steam account in two places, allowing you to play LAN together.
    Hope this helps.

I think you technically can, but it's a bit of a grey area.

I asked that question to Tiy a long time ago, about gifting one of the two version. His anwser was along the lines of, you could, but we'd rather you don't. Not sure if the way they are going to do it changed since then.

Seems like something that could very well happen although I don't think it will be something they integrate into the game. Simply for the fact that Croyd stated.

hmmmm... I think "think" that you would be able to give them the drm version, although they would not be able to play multiplayer since the need an account

    This is incorrect.

[03:00] <@kyren> also, just so you guys know
[03:00] <@kyren> there will be an account system on playstarbound.com someday
    [03:00] <@kyren> eventually
    [03:01] <Arpege> 'Account system'?
[03:01] <@kyren> so, you should be able to download starbound from there too
[03:01] <Arpege> You won't have to log in through there to play, right?
[03:01] <@kyren> yeah, something so you can see all what you've purchased outside of humble store
    [03:01] <Arpege> Oh, good.
[03:01] <WarStalkeR> i.e. steam like stuff but for chucklefish and at webz only
[03:01] <@kyren> no no, but what we're THINKING about
    [03:01] <@kyren> well, what we're thinking about
[03:01] <@kyren> is having an *optional* thing
[03:01] <@kyren> where you can use authenticated names
[03:01] <@kyren> so, if you have bought the game
    [03:01] <@kyren> and you run a server
    [03:02] <@kyren> you can OPTIONALLY
[03:02] <@kyren> put it into "authenticated only" mode
[03:02] <@kyren> so you know that if 'kyren' logs in that it's really 'kyren'
[03:02] <@kyren> sort of like how minecraft works, but entirely optional
    [03:02] <WarStalkeR> I like that

Took me about 20 minutes to find this, it was buried deep
