Why can't they be both? There could be battleaxes, which are weapons, and woodcutting axes.

It's something of a fair compromise, the War Axe of the Night hits harder giving it a wider range of enemies it could OHKO, for slower attack speed than Light's Bane. It's also not a step towards a *much* more powerful weapon.

Of course, there is the small problem with Terraria that melee was kind of the fool's pursuit relative to ranged combat.

Regarding Axes in Starbound, I believe the last time any dev for mentioned knockback it was stated that you needed a blow that removed 40% of the target's health to cause a knockback to occur. If Axes are able to hit hard, but attack slower and have less reach, it might give them a niche that'll keep them from being completely invalid in one portion of the game's mechanics. I just hope whacking enemies doesn't dull them like chopping down trees.

Hold up, is this for real? What's been going on with the daily updates? I thought they were just gone.

When they switched hosts it messed with the caches. They've still been daily.

Doesn't work that way. They've already stated that you can't teleport while underground. So, if you want to use your ship to magically repair your tools, then you'll have to backtrack through the caves or tunnels you came in through.

    IMO that's good! :)
it's harder to do a hellevator, but still, if some1 insists in doing so, its just dig dig dig, go all the way up, teleport, teleport back, jump down and dig dig dig

The thing is, people didn't make Hellivators in Terraria because they enjoyed doing so. It tended to be tedious work at times. Making it twice as tedious isn't going to stop anyone, it will just annoy them more.

However, there's another side to this. I'm not convinced that making Hellivators in Starbound is as required as it is in Terraria. You don't exactly have to dig down to get to a more interesting place. You can simply go to a higher level planet.

meh... let's wait for the game.
if hellevaters aren't necessary, we don't make 'em. if they are, we wait till mid/end-game tools with higher durability to make 'em :)
for me, still no down-side to durability

Take into consideration that durability could have the potential to be switched around with mods or difficulties. So remember that what is already in the game may not be the final package for your gameplay experience, and you'll have the ability to change it, add to it, or remove it! (no idea why you would remove stuff) ;)

It's unclear how that will work exactly. Personally, I hope you can beam back to your ship as long as there is nothing but open air above you, regardless of depth. I think hellevators should still have some kind of function, but it should be minor. I mean, why bother to dig a hellevator just to beam up to your ship if you still have to make it back to that hellevator before you can escape? You'd still have danger involved when exploring, since it still isn't practical to dig a whole bunch of them everywhere. Of course, they might just not allow beaming back to your ship if you are below a certain depth, but then they'd have to figure out coding to prevent you from escaping dungeons that are above ground.
This is the main reason I would want them to retain some kind of functionality, mainly because you'd only bother to make them on your home world so that you could explore it more thoroughly. Then again, if there are telepads or something, that should serve the same purpose because you could use the telepad to reach the surface and beam up from there.

The important thing is that I hope they implement some form of fast travel between well-prepared locations.

Omni has mentioned a girlfriend, and I don't think it is Kyren.

AFAIK, Omni was just staying at Kyren's place for a few days, cuz he mentioned it on May 26th.

    The plot thickens?

I have to agree. There's a certain kind of fun that comes with the old Hellivator. Stepping into it and just watch your character fall through the depths. Even if it was fun, it wouldn't make sense if it was pointless. It's this kind of thing that's partly why I am against the idea of tool durability in Starbound. If I get some wild idea in my head to do something, I don't want to be held back or annoyed because I'm worried about upkeep.

This is the way I assumed it would be, that you simply couldn't beam up at a certain depth. Simply because that seems like the easiest way to handle it.

I don't think it would be that hard to prevent players from beaming out of an above-ground dungeon. Take Terraria's Dungeon for an example. When you're in the Dungeon, you only meet dungeon enemies. If we can make it so only certain monsters spawn in a certain area, then I am sure we can prevent beam out if in a certain area.

I don't think that will be the case. I hope I'm wrong, because teleporter pads would make for a nifty alternative to digging a hellivator. Any post I've seen from Tiy about digging hellivators or just digging straight down, he only talked about how he wants to discourage it. If teleporter pads were an intended alternative, I'm sure he would've mentioned it. Besides, I've seen one post from Tiy on the idea of teleporter pads and he seemed to be against the idea.

I like that purple Buster Blade-like sword :catface2:
and that blue one next to it, with all the teeth, just looks ike it belongs to a Hylotl Berserker! :viking:

as for the potential purpose behind Hellevators, could it be that some (or even most planets) would have a bottom layer similar to a core, where there's just a large mass of ores, or maybe gems of some sort?

Undeniable proof that the Terraria Harpies evolved into the Avians! :sneaky:

But there are supposed to be valleys and chasms in this game, so if it were depth based, then you'd find yourself in trouble.
