Different respawn animations for each race would be so cool. I'm getting too excited just thinking about it.

Can we get some speculations o what's going on in that photo? (Wow, there's a sentence I never thought I'd need to say on these forums)

    Well that's.. mildly disappointing.

So many alternatives that could have promoted sideways/cave exploring besides (ineffectively) discouraging a play-style. Two picks or three and unless durability is massively annoying, and I'll be able to dig down/grid just like in minecraft. Now if there was cave only stuff, or some positive reason to make seeking them out a priority then strip mining.. After all caves will have enemies and other things with more room to spawn them. Needs a positive to outweigh it.

One idea, Terraria made worthwhile and could be expanded on. Multiple crystal types. Have them only generate (slowly) in -wide open- (not tunneled) spaces underground.
Multitudes of hanging flora fruit that grows in caves but only if the vines reach down far enough. Random background only half burred treasure chests that are easy to see in caves.

Have things spawn there besides enemies that are worth hunting for, reasons to go into open underground areas. Fossils are a good start but it needs more! Give us reasons to explore chucklefish! Not just a mild arguable convenience negated by the risk of more enemies.

It's okay, Omni naked just means Omni in a shower with a cape on.

well, terraria-wise, the hardcore players do this right away, because it helps reaching end-game features faster, either by getting deeper ores or/and killing the WoF and enabling hard mode...
i'm not sure what is in the deepest caves of starbound planets, but losing tool durability forces players to go through ore filled caves instead of just digging down, wich, IMO, improves gameplay quality
heck, even let's play videos gets more interesting with this!

but caves exist in starbound  , i think starbound will have plenty of things underground but they just dont want to make the way to it that easy, like it was in terraria.

hm, i don't think starbound lacks reasons to explore horizontally...
as far as i know, there's dungeons, seeking for ores, caves with unique weapons, etc, so basically its all terraria's reasons + fossils! ;)
the durability is something more for the player to think before digging aimlessly.
and if you really want to make a hell-levator right at the start, you can still do it!
just dig dig dig dig dig, teleport to ship to restore durability, teleport back and dig dig dig more!
IMO it only affects those who wants to play "fluidly", if that makes any sense :)

edit: vertical, horizontal... thos things always confuses me

I was thinking of opening a thread just to talk of durability since it has been such a popular theme, but I'll leave it here to avoid being a like-whore.

tl;dr? Regarding durability, what do we know now:
    - It's only for tools, not weapons, armors, etc.
    - Doesn't destroy the tool when it depletes.
    - Doesn't render the tool completely useless.
    - Durability can be restored.

Now, here's what I think of it.
    - I enjoyed the news that tools shall not be destroyed or become totally useless when durability runs out.
    - I really dislike the fact that the simple teleporting into the ship will restore you tool. Too easy.
    - I like the sharpening idea. Not only it encourages mining, but requires preparation, like setting camps along your path to have extra tools stored, etc.
    - I'm not sure I like the fact you can simply drop an ore on the tool and it will be 100% useful again. I'd prefer some sort of item, like a crafting bench where you can sharp any tool you have, even if that also requires a couple extra ores to do it.

we don't know exactly how teleport works...
maybe there's a cost to teleport back, or maybe you can only teleport from your spawnpoint!
i think devs would't make the fixing so easy without thinking of a balance to it

also, we don't know if ores will restore durability to 100%, we only know "health goes up"

and i agree, sharpening sounds fantastic

Yeah I don't really understand how teleporting to your ship magically fixes all your tools. There should be some sort of machine that sharpens them for pixels, and after a while you need to add some ore to the tool to keep it from wearing away.

Implication that axes aren't weapons. I really hope it won't be like Terraria where they're third-class offensive options. :(

Or the axe doing MORE damage than the sword of the same class.. (not naming names but you know what axe I meant..)
