I have an idea for a solution to this. All the while having the background of moving asteroid sprites, instead of having one "orbital" zone in which players drop down and find themselves in new locations, there should be two. They are essentially identical, and the second zone is basically just the "next step". The first zone is directly connected to the rest of the map. Dropping down from zone one to anywhere else has no change on your position or anything.

However, if you approach the "roof" of zone one, you will cross a barrier and appear from the bottom at zone two, where you continue to explore the rest of the vertical height of the asteroids but in an area where, if you were to drop below the bottom border, you would appear at the top at zone one and fall in a respective place according to that little time-of-day mechanic in zone one's field.

How does that sound? Does it make any sense? If it doesn't, I'll try my best to clear myself up.

    Here's my 2 cents:

It shouldn't be possible to tower up to space without some super awesome materials or really low gravity on the planet. I like the idea of space elevators, but it shouldn't be possible by piling dirt on itself.

Terminal velocity should be higher the higher elevation you go. Reentry effects could happen if you're going faster than that (only possible if you're falling from above).

If you actually tried to make orbit mechanics realistic, it would do some really weird things, be hard to code, and not be as fun as just reducing gravity and wind resistance. You could make it more realistic by making higher elevations rotate relative to lower ones, but you'd need a strict no build zone in the transition to prevent all the structures from being sheared off.

I would argue that the singing update was the best, because of all the sheer rage it caused within the community. :catface2:

Asteroids in a geosynchronous orbit will probably move just as fast as anything that flew (or was built) from the ground to the asteroid belt, so you shouldn't realize it is actually moving, as you're caught on the inertia of the planet's rotation itself and thus the greater the radius of your rotation, the greater the speed you move...

So yeah, as far as I know, asteroids orbiting a planet on a geosynchronous state should seem like they're just standing still when you reach them from the ground....

Also, about building structures from the ground to the space: If you had the material needed to sustain the weight of the structure itself (and the forces applied into it) till you reached the space, you'd be able to build it so that it would be SO high that the centrifugal force of the rotation of the planet and the weak grasp of the gravity would make it so that the structure wouldn't actually weight anything...

I don't know if anyone's asked this yet (didn't sift through all 15 pages) but, will pretty much every planet have asteroids?

Only thing there is to wish for is that the asteroids, that are in stable orbit, would move (in various speeds) in their orbit. Would be funny if you drop from 1 asteroid and get splatted by fast moving asteroid on the way down :D Asteroid mining should be dangerous!

Also would be freaking awesome if you could alter the flight or just pull down asteroid(s) to planet surface - with appropriate *boom*!

Can we make satelites? (also would be fun if they wear down and you would need to fix them periodically / randomly(not too often))

No idea, however you can catch sight of a small mob dropping from an upper asteroid in the video. So at least, there will be (spaceproof) fauna. Probably too early in dev to make conclusions, though.

Still think it would be cool to have some sort of landing craft.

I feel like a Higher Orbital Jump would kill most people. If it was just a HALO jump that would be different.

Don't know if any plans for any type of teleporters are planned for implementation but with how long it took to drop from the belt i imagine its going to take longer to make your way up there. As far as teleporters go you could make them as a placeable item that links to ever other teleporter on that planet. You could also make it so you can only connect so many teleporters on each planet and make items that allow you to upgrade the capacity, for example power cells or something that need to be placed next to the teleporters, in case your worried about the functionality being abused. Just a thought.

Must be painful to miss the usual teleport when a pesky asteroid crosses ways with the drop >8D

so, i take that opening on the ship was left there cause now we can just get out of the ship and drop into the asteroid belt? does this also means we can get back to the ship by hopping from asteroid to asteroid until we reach the ship?
