Florans should make good fiber. Out of their bodies.

Dyes made from flowers? I dig it! It adds another level of collection in the game and gives flowers a use within the game beyond just lookin' pretty.

I don't mean to unsettle you all, but... don't sources of water flow down a mountain/slope/gradient in order to join together into a single, larger stream or river? It looks to me as though gravity was turned upside down in that background. Almost makes me forget about the pretty flowers!

As for fabrics, the answer is obvious. Painfully obvious! Fabrics come from fabricators!

Either that, or you add a spider race that has a spinneret and give them a monopoly on any and all spider silks in the entire galaxy! You could also just go with the usual suspects of cotton-like plants, furs, leathers and so forth. Domestic or loot drop, although I'd personally lean towards the former.

How will looting work in multiplayer?
Also how will planet/loot/enemy scaling work with multiplayer?

    Fabrics, eh?
    - Processing certain gathered crops in special ways to get vegetal fabrics.
    - Shearing 'wolly' creatures, then processing their hair, and the skin of some other creatures for leather, to get animal fabrics.
    - Synthetic materials made out of processed minerals to get artificial fabrics.
    - And, of course, certain micro-organisms and fungi could be processed to for fabrics to get 'strange' fabrics with special properties.

    That'll cover enough sources.

the rivers in the background doesn't really fit in. at first i didn't even think of rivers and wondered what these blue lines could be :lod:

Fabric, could be obtained off of plants you harvest (like cotton, the starbound equivalent ... space cotton), or off of mobs you kill (like killing a spider yields silk). Then you treat the material with chems or something then sew it together on a loom, but considering this is a space futuristic game how about some sorta broken matter generator, think star trek, but this is for clothing only problem is it is broken so you have to find data chips or clothing disks or some such sci fi thing to get it to generate clothing. Maybe you find these in the wreckage of some other unlucky star fairer. Those are my thoughts

For Fabric I would say that the player should trade with various random NPCs. It would make sense, and even sort of recall the old days when humans used ships to trade with other countries! (Silks the like of which you have never seen!!)

It could be that when you talk to an npc it could offer a certain number of bolts or whatever of fabric in exchange for some amount of a small item (salt, spices, etc.) and the item/amount needed would change every so often. I would enjoy these beneficial mini-quests! :D

A system kind of like Don't Starve would work for doing something with furs; how in Don't Starve you build the drying rack to help your food last longer and be more nutritious, for example. I'm thinking monsters could drop a generic "Fur" item, and when you use it at a tanning rack, you get various grades of fiber or cloth back from it, depending on the level tier of the monster in question. So that way you won't really know that you got the Exotic Golden Space Fleece until you've done tanning/curing/whatever to it.

I think it would be a neat aspect of survival, and not many games have that detail when it comes to survival mechanics.

Looking at the screenshot, it really does look pretty weird for the stream to be branching out as it goes down the mountain. Ghostie is right: that ain't how it works!

Anyway, I think the base materials for fabrics should be reliably available on nearly every planet (level appropriate, of course). This way you could develop fabrics alongside the ore tiers without having to go out of your way to find spacesheep or the special blue hanging-lillies of Nethron 5 or whatever. Start with just plant fiber and animal fiber and let technology constraints control it from there.

    1. You could make most plant based items able to be processed into "plant fiber" or "space cotton" or whatever you want to call it.
    2. Mob-parts that look wooly or furry could add to the generated mob a higher chance to drop animal fiber.
    3. Higher tier fabrics can be crafted by the above + whatever fancy space materials are suitable to the tier, or there could just be finer weave patterns that require higher level tech or larger amounts of fiber to make.

Higher level plants/mobs would naturally yield larger quantities of the base fibers.

Just as an example, if you need 10 tiers:

    1. Linen - plant fiber, tech "1"
    2. Wool - animal fiber, tech 1
    3. Synthetic - some common materials (pixels/3D printed?), tech 2
    4. Satin - plant, tech 2
    5. Silk - animal, tech 2
    6. Microfiber - any lower fabric, tech 3
    7. Wireweft - synthetic + some kind of ore or metal, tech 4
    8. Gemsilk - animal + diamonds or something, tech 5
    9. Infusile - plant + plutonium or something crazy, tech 5
    10. Starfleece - microfiber + D::rainbow::V , top tech

Hi Guys, just recently signed up and pre-ordered this fantastic looking game. Just wanted to say it looks amazing and I cant wait. As for fabrics i agree with the "Get them from animals etc." post, thats seems like a good way of doing it. I'd also like to be cheeky and hint that any game that adds a Leather Trenchcoat is an instant winner in my books ;) Keep up the outstanding work guys and gals.

Personally, I like the idea of being able to craft fabrics. Players can find or grow cotton and flax analogues or have drops from creatures with wool or silk. Take that to the loom and out pops a bolt of fabric.

You could get fabrics from the fur of monsters, or from vines. Also, a cool Idea, might be too much work, who knows. You could make the layer of dirt below the flowers be a root layer, where we can see the flower roots, and water can sink into those places, instead of rest on top?
