* Fedora Frogg NPC * Mole NPC that only appears in underground housing * Zoo Keeper NPC that takes care of pets and captured monsters, or allows you to show off your captured monster without having them follow you everywhere * A Farmer that raises chickens and crops
An NPC like the Oblivion Arena fan would be neat. They are always excited to see you when you come and they give you food and small trophies that get better as you complete small tasks or feats for them. Or a love interest NPC who gives you notes and has unique dialogue based on how you complete their quests (happy you brought a red flower or sad ypu brought a reject letter).
Glitched item furniture set that is only obtainable by rare npc trading lets you spawn a dev, they only stay in your game for a set amount of time though.
I like that you guys keep making steady progress on this. ^-^ As for ideas, I was actually thinking about this yesterday.. how we'll have cities and such soon. I know you guys have a lot of ideas in the works atm, like the fact that colonies might come under attack occasionally. Anyways, as I thought about it, something occurred to me. As a colony grows, it starts to take on life of it's own. attract more people etc. So it might be neat to see this reflected in your choices of what NPC's you pick, or perhaps the number of them. Like, perhaps the more you have certain npcs in the town, the easier they are to respawn or even attract. I do hope that as this gets more fleshed out, your choices start to impact the colony, or even present unique quests. Also another concept occurred to me. Perhaps have some air traffic above your colonies.. I mean, they had to get to this planet somehow right? On that note, I'm not the only space captain, I can't be. There are dungeons that even imply this, the outpost, etc.. so why do I never see any graphics of people flying about? Heck, it might even be neat if you could try to court an npc.. would add another layer to the game. Anyways, npc ideas: Star Captain (retired) So it would be nice to see a retired star captain type npc. In my mind, he'd sell you things like ship parts. Something that fits the theme. Would be pretty funny if he talked about the good ol' days and said something like "I used to be an adventurer like you.." Hoarder This NPC would require a lot of junk/broken items as the theme in their home and often asks you for items. However they would also serve a function wherein you could fuse some items together to make a new one. Barkeep/Inn Keeper This NPC would be like a food merchant, but would only sell drinks. Would have an effect on other npcs.. perhaps keeps them calmer, or helps prevent raids from happening as much. Often talks about the npcs in the colony. Traumatized Tentant This NPC has been through too much. Maybe he's the last of his group alive, he lost his home planet, crashed his ship, supernorn got ahold of him, or a whole slew of possible reasons. But he clearly has some problems and is more than a bit scared. Often runs away or rants about something. Children Should this be a pair of kids who play ball around the colony or a single kid, I feel this would be a great addition. Would have to theme their house with bright colors, play blocks and toys or something like that. When they talk to you, occasionally they would imply they are runaways. Islander Would have a bamboo or similar theme house, possibly carrying a surf board. Gives stuff like coconuts and sunglasses.
Awesome! Now I have a reason to tell my cousin to keep those NPC's alive! Haha, he's a bit blood lusty, I tell ya!

Ideas of NPC's? Add the developers as tenants, tenats that can be spawned if you use a mixture of rare furniture. Said dev tenats could perhaps give some vanity items as a special reward (the dev vanity items perhaps?). Another idea would be to add rare parody tenats of popular characters (from other games, movies, etc). Also, can tenats give quests? Becuse quest giver tenants would be a realy nice idea (perhaps having a rare tenant that gives a quest chain leading to a unique rare spaceship for example, or you could also go for more common quests giving some shematics or materials, etc). They still "command plants" according to the lore. From Greenfinger's Notes: Treetop Dwellings: "Since the Floran can command plants, it made perfect sence that they would shape their homes from the very trees that protect them. " So a floran gardener would make sense.
I would love to see a collector NPC that would be really hard to get (for example - needing 2 item of each sub-biome), but would actually produce sub-biome items as rent. Maybe he could look somewhat like The Collector from the Marvel Universe I actually think that would really fit the game.
I'm sure I'm not the first one to think about that, but @mollygos, do you think it is strange to have different trees in the background? I mean, the trees, growing in the world, and the background trees are not the same! Not these trees, but the ones you showed in the previous update. What are you thoughts?
So about that improved background... Will worlds already in our universes get this graphical upgrade? Because I LOVE, LOVE how the forest world looks in those shots, and I'd love it if my homeworld's backdrop started looking like that...
Oh... Maybe some out of the box NPCs. Like a storage room type that spawns a cleaner bot, similar to the ones you can find in the USCM bases; if not those exactly. The place would be many crates, and depending on which crate combo you have you may end up with a different looking cleaner bot or even one that is armed to defend the storage. In other words probably some NPCs that don't exactly pay rent but will spawn with aesthetics or other purposes in place of rent. Have lots of sewer pipes and drains covered in... Well the glitch sewer pieces and blocks... This would spawn either a spider bot or that big & small brown thing as a tenant. Also having certain combos that will be more of a pet preserve or pet tenant, or even a tenant with a pet. Maybe even one that spawns with a robot servant; thinking "I, robot" the movie with that last one. What I am getting at is to have some be more than NPCs that pay rent, but might have other purpose for them. Salesman of various kinds also part of that, which I would think having more than the glitch & hylotl register might help diversify it further with that specific one. Maybe having plushies would be a plushy salesman or collector with quests to obtain or give to said NPC. Chain tenants that will unlock possible ways to get other types of tenants, like what someone else mentioned; an inn, motel, or the like. Basically having a building with hallway and rooms. The hallway would be the inn part that you would have to place certain objects in to get innkeeper. The catch is they will not move in unless there are a certain number of rooms connected to this hallway within the building already have tenants. Wonder if that would be possible to do, well it is a thought. Figured I would put something else out there for people to think about as well...
I do not think so much about the NPC, as about the Autonomous Colony ... independent, self-sufficient... which only need to be established via few basic buildings and NPC units. Do you know? And, of course, a Colony should have normal Guard. Current Guardians are worthless. They are rush like, a madmen, for the players... or stand still without any action and doesn't even seeing a hostile monster in the eye.
They are working on this. Yesterday was a preview. Today they showed how they are matching the background trees with the actual trees found on the planet.
