I think you should just highlight until the quest is finished or skipped. I liked the way it looks though.

Maybe release a playable product so you can have a larger sample size and see that this actually was never a problem to begin with, and that you're just wasting time and adding unnecessary hand-holding to an element of the game that doesn't need it.
Honestly, if the dev team is just going to be making mountains out of molehills for the next 3 months- it's time to put something out there.

While that may be the impression we're getting from the updates, I don't think thats whats actually happening. They've already made it pretty clear they only tell us what they think is "interesting" and we've had a snippet of "behind the scenes" discussion via online means between a couple devs (see the Rho update discussion, Omni posted it) which demonstrated that they want to hold back on the 'technobabble' so as not to confuse some of the less programming inclined people.

I like to think they're working hard, but I agree that the recent updates don't give that impression unfortunately.

man, they still have not gotten back into the groove of the updates but i don't care, so long as we get them SOME time :)

George, as the locker is an important part of the first experience, why don't you simply disallow beaming down until the player at least interacted once with said locker? Just looking into it once should be enough.

I suppose it would be cool if there was an option or something that allowed that to be turned off in subsequent playthroughs, or have text options for labels like that.

Textbox looks great, fits the game's atmosphere, and I think it will help people to get around in the beginning,
but I think later on, when they know all the stuff, it will get annoying for some of us.
It would be most pleasing, if you could make the texyness optional, this way everyone will be super happy :D

I agree with with what many people above me have said... there has got to be a more elegant solution to this problem. Two things I thought of (and was not surprised to see many people also mention) that I think would work perfectly in tandem, would be:

    1. Starting off with a quest that guides you through using each important ship system, one which says something along the lines of "Get this item from the locker" and then put a quest marker or highlight on the locker area to point out to the player where that is. After completing that quest, you are led to fix the second part of the idea, which is...

    2. You can't leave your ship until you finish that first quest about the locker.

This could be written very simply and engagingly (well, as engaging as a 30 second long quest can be) like this:

During entry into orbit, a random wave of dark energy reversed the polarity of your ship's neutron flow, causing multiple malfunctions across your ship. Jumping into action, you were able to secure essential ship functions, such as life support and Super-Wi-Fi, however a flashing light on your console draws your attention to the fact that your fuel tanks have leaked their entire contents before you were able to seal them. As you are about to start gathering your things to beam down to the surface to search for fuel alternatives, you notice a large smoke-cloud wafting up from your teleporter. Realizing now that you should have spent the extra credits to have that mechanic replace your teleporter's anti-mass spectrometer before it blew, you look around your ship for a brilliant and elegant solution to your teleporter problem.

    Current Quest:
*Look for Duct Tape in your locker.

Then, you can have a glowy quest marker thing pointing to the locker, or - with the teleporter being temporarily disabled - just let the player poke around the ship until they find it, which shouldn't be too difficult to find. Then, when you click on the locker you get something simple like:

    QUEST COMPLETE!
While you were searching through your locker for the Duct Tape, you came across a couple other useful looking items. An enterprising space-explorer such as yourself would be negligent to leave them behind.

Now, you could even add the "picking up" of those items to the quest objectives, or make a new quest, or whatever. Needless to say, you could make a very simple, fun, and leading quest line as opposed to putting a giant blinking arrow above the locker. Frankly, I'm surprised that "Giant Label" was the solution that you guys arrived at. I haven't felt the need to chime in on anything you guys have announced before because, really, it's all been entirely phenomenal and brilliant (up until this, which really isn't THAT bad, but enough for me to make a comment), and I can't wait to play this game.

Also, just for fun, for the Avian race, you could have the item you retrieve be Duck Tape.

    Keep up the great work!

I don't know if it has been suggested yet, but perhaps during the tutorial, the camera could pan over to the locker when it is mentioned, or perhaps, have flashing text above it for a brief period of time. Either way, looks great guys. Keep up the awesome work, and we can't wait until this gets released to the public!

Cool and all, but why is there 2 different Locker Pictures?

This is the Locker from the Big Picture...

    Capture2.PNG

And here is the one from the Small Picture...

    lockeranim.gif

Why does one have the Arrow, and the other doesent? Is One Open somehow? Or? Cuz there Both the Glitch Lockers, and Both are updated with the Text...but why are they Both Different?

And I kinda like the one that has the Arrow better too!

Btw Please dont fall behind in the updates again :) I like having Daily updates, rather then 2 days in one, But if your Behind, 2+ in one day is Fine!

The problem is obvious, but instead of saying whats there, how about making them bigger and more a part of the ship? Maybe make a simple opening gif on mouseover. Also starting with a couple uber simple quests with maybe some cute robo-pet that at least guides you into the first landing.

Just wow. Yet another amazing post that touched my heart. Not possible to top this I thought again... How wrong I was.

Keep doing what your doing buddy.

...Hate it with a passion, since I'm's a guy who likes me my immersiveness, dagnabbit. I mean, in reality we occasionally are this bad with labelling things, but when it comes to having only three things, we generally don't put a big bold sign over it saying "LOCKER". Instead there's a little subtle sign near it, if anything.

I like the posited "tutorial markers on/off" suggestion that's been kicking around on the thread, but love the option of simply preventing new players from beaming down to the surface first until they've looted the locker, e.g., with a single-use item in their locker which they have to use to "activate" the ship prior to launch. If the ship is stranded over the planet like I believe is the general back story, why not have to use an emergency power cell to recharge the ship's systems before the teleporter has enough juice?

Ever considered writing a novel? You have a gift, my friend. Never before have mere words evoked so much emotion that could draw a tear from my eye. This style of writing is quite similar to Terry Goodkind's latest works.

It looks very bad, please find other way of highlighting important items and objects you can interact with. What will be next? Signs saying "doors", or signs above smashable objects saying "smash"?

Thank you for your sincere response... but for your information i completely read everything and post properly because that is how i feel and know about those posts... but anyway you are right some people exaggerate about this and that... and some posts while short gives more meaningful and informative knowledge about Starbound and its contents... its just that i'm really hyped over this game ever since i discovered it. I'm sure your also hyped over this game too... So at least understand what i and some other people feel...

Hopefully we all have a great time playing this game... once the beta is released. :)
The most important thing to remember is... Enjoy a game you really like...

    Thank you friend. :)

I'd really like to be able to say this another way, but I can't: if someone needs that, he shouldn't be playing the game, just like a 2 years old child shouldn't play either. That text is TERRIBLE, It's technically very very well done, with a neat screen animation, just like everything in Satrbound so far. But the fact that there is a HUGE text indicating what everything is just terrible. Get rid of it or make it optional. Nobody, absolutely nobody needs it. The minority of... less gifted people who could have a problem with it would solve it in a matter of seconds, maybe minutes, and they would even enjoy discovering it. The game, however, NEEDS to be nice, pleasant to the eyes, and huge textboxes as big as the objects they are in make the spaceships look BAD. And that's only the first time we see it. The second time you will dislike it more and more, and you will eventually hate how the spaceship won't look good/elegant/minimalistic whatever you do, because there are huge textboxes on things you already know, and everytime you return to the spaceship, you will ONLY see the huge text and wonder why you can't turn it off.
