10-heart event triggered without giving bouquet

Hi, I'm playing on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.12.6, no mods.

I married Emily and have not dated anyone else before or since (did not present the bouquet to anyone but her). However I continued to give gifts and befriend others. I had a high friendship level with Alex, then presented him with a loved gift on his birthday, and suddenly he has sent me the letter inviting me to his 10-heart event. I still only have 8 hearts with him in the friendship tracking screen, but the purple star indicative of max relationship appears when I speak to him. This should not be possible without presenting him with the bouquet.

Alex your hair is cool and all but but I don't want to cheat on my lovely wife with you. Right now I'm just avoiding the saloon at night but it's bothersome. Is there a way to edit the save file to fix this?
