After seeing the incoming permadeath option, I thought that would kinda suck. But then I saw "wipe the universe", in which this suggestion came into mind; all characters are in one universe. This, of course, should only apply to single-player mode. Description: all characters apply to one universe, in which they can visit each other's buildings that one has made in a certain planet.
There is kinda a little problem with what you are saying... Imagine in a year from now creating a new character and spawning on a planet that has already been visited by other players.. No wood, no ore and nothing to do. You wouldnt even be able to go to another planet because there would be no coal . Or you could have a base on a planet where you store all your item and when you came back you would have nothing left because of scavengers! So i dont think this would be a great idea but if you want something like that why dont you play multiplayer? Have your own server with a lot of people playing on different planet then you can visit the other one planet!
I think this is already the case, but I'm not certain. Try getting the coordinates for one of your single-player planets, then fly there on another character. Not if the game always generates a new character on a new planet. I don't think they're suggesting that you drop every new character on the same planet, only that they exist in the same universe. There would be a (unbelievably rare) chance of finding a planet already visited by another character through random exploration (without using coordinates to find it).
Isn't it already the case? I thought that was already true, maybe they changed this in a previous patch.
Nope, this is still the case. Build something at spawn with one character and then use another character to go there, you'll see your structure with all the supplies you stored there.
Easy solution to this: Always keep some trees alive on any planet you strip of resources. As long as there are trees (and a little cobblestone) you can smelt the wood for coal. And you can plant more trees from the seeds they drop.
I'm pretty sure he wants the exact opposite... He wants all of his characters to be able to have a single universe (with tons of planets) when he plays Single Player. So, if all of them go to the Alpha sector, coordinates 1492, 1917, and go to the III planet of that system, they will see the exact same planet, structures, weather, etc. If you mean that Characters and Worlds are stored independently of each other (like in Terraria, where you can select Character A and World B, or Character B and World , then that's also not what he wants in Single Player. He wants them to always be in the same universe. However, he seems to imply that he wants Multiplayer to be a different universe, since he singles out Single Player in this thread. That would allow his "Creative Mode" singleplayer to be separate from his potentially-PVP Multiplayer universe. AKA: He doesn't need to worry about people in Multiplayer coming in and breaking his stuff.
But my characters already share the same universe? Unless I'm missing something here lol My first character built a house on a planet My second character travels to said planet that was build on and saw the building/built structure
Another idea: Universes are synced with a server, you don't need to be connected to the server and when you have a connection with the internet it is uploaded in the background and your changes are placed. You don't see other players unless you play explicit on that server. There could be conflicts with the other buildings, built in the same time but it would be funny if you go on a trip and there stands a new house when you get back
All this is how it is, afaik. In singleplayer, the planets you build on are changed for everyone playing on your installation. In multiplayer, the planets you build on are changed for everyon playing on the server installation. Little techily put: There only one universe folder per installation, no matter wether this installation is used locally or as a server. In multiplayer, this will also be where the promised homeplanet protection will be important. With a few hundred players out there, it's surprisingly probable to have any two of them meet. There's a party bet that, at a party with more than twenty guests, any two were born on the same day of the year, and the odds are you'll win (because you check every person against all the others, so you play the odds multiple times, so to speak)
Did I get it right that when you want to build on a server you have to be connected to it? So my internet isn't the best (512 KB/s) and it would be good if I don't need to be connected... (BTW I know how servers work in starbound I host my own some time)
Yes, you were right. I checked this feature and turns out it was ALREADY implemented. My mistake. I'm closing this thread for this. Thank you for your comments, all. Edit: err...how do I close a thread in this forum? Only admins and moderators can do it? 6_9
