Sorry if this is off topic but.. I thought it was worth mentioning. Developer of Minecraft, Markus "Notch" Persson, has been creating a space game recently that goes by the name (so far) 0x10c. Now what does this have to do with Starbound? Remember those "ripoff" trolls from minecraft seeing terraria... this might wake them up.
Now this being another 3D-ish game, it will probably be released soon I'd imagine, and depending on how far it is from the release of Starbound, the more people will think "ripoff".
Here's the logic of a normal person looking new games: "Oh a new game by notch? *plays* I ___ it! Another space game by a dev of terraria as well as his new company? *plays* I ___ it!" (Depending on opinion)
And here's the logic of an internet gaming troll: "NEW NOTHC GEME *plays* AWZUM! Tewawia devs mad a spac geme in 2d? RIPOFF!"
I thought I'd just let this be.. um.. more known. I'm not sure if there's anything to do about it, but I've seen it happen with terraria, cubeworld, and other games.

Can I have a link to this game? And yeah, that would be bad if something like that happens. Hopefully, and I speak for us all, Starbound will be released soon.

http://0x10c.com/ It's not released yet, but it will be soon, I don't know how soon though.

    Just checked the link.

Oh boy, Tiy better deliver a pretty damn incredible game cause this one has duct tape.

Serious now, I don't care if it's a ripoff or not, this game seems interesting, if it's good I'll play it.

There's no point in picking sides & calling the other a ripoff. There were plenty of space games before & there will be plenty more to come. Buy games you like, deciding whether or not to purchase a game because it's x amount similar to another is silly.

I haven't seen much of the game yet but if I like it, I'll get it.

0x10c is not a voxel based game, the only similarity between it and Starbound is the setting in space.

I'm not saying I think EITHER of them are a ripoff, I'm just saying there will be people who will think that way.

honestly if 0x10c was voxel based (made of blocks) then people would likely yell about people ripping off other people, but it is not so the only similarity is the sci-fi setting, i honestly doubt that any of us well ever see anyone calling either a rip off the other.

well your talking as if we well have an epidemic of it, (like the terraria trailer launch), but honestly, if people say we are ripping of they are gonna say its off terraria, or minecraft, i really do doubt anyone well draw any lines between us and 0x10c.

If someone considers a game a ripoff because it shares some ideas or settings, that is their opinion. It's an opinion that isn't very open but its an opinion. Now opinions aren't facts, and I remember back in the early Terraria days people calling Terraria a ripoff of Minecraft. Back to this issue of 0x10c. I doubt it will really bring any problems to us with the ripoff trolls, and if it does it will probably be very little. The thing that makes a game a ripoff is when another company or group makes the EXACT same game, and by exact I mean completely the same. Terraria and Minecraft both had unique features that made them different, and so does Starbound and 0x10c. If anyone gives us trouble involving the ripoff statement, just remember these people only think on a one side of the street and will almost never want to cross it, so I say leave them on that side of the street. If someone crosses that street, give them a pat on the back and welcome them.

I'm scared about Mojang fanboys calling Starbound a rip-off from Ox10c.
Well, Starbound was in development earlier, so that won't matter.

Why are we bringing this topic before it even happened?(hopefully it won't happen at all) I think we should be confident that starbound is not a rip-off of anything.

He knows it isn't a ripoff of anything, he is just predicting that there are people who are going to claim Starbound is a ripoff of 0x10c, and most likely vice-versa, regardless of the fact that neither is a ripoff of the other.

As for the game itself, it looks like it will be quite good. As such, I will probably play and enjoy both, and not care at all which came first, and whether anything is a true ripoff of anything else.

Personally I think the game will be ok, but he's said there's going to be a monthly fee on multiplayer, so in that regard he's already failed.

    It depends on a few things (that I can think of at the moment). In no particular order;

    1. How complex the multiplayer is (this is a lesser factor, because a game can have complex multiplayer and still be free, but I suppose it depends on the full content of the multiplayer).
    2. How much money maintenance of servers etc. will cost.
    3. What the price per month is, and whether it is value for money, whether he is going for profit, or just so he can keep the servers up and running. So if he goes for it WoW style, he is likely to fail, but a few pounds a month probably wouldn't be bad.

Saying that, I am betting that a hell of a lot of people will sign up to it (I may be one of these people, dependent on price of game and subscription).

    Starbound barely relates to 0x10c.
They're just space games, both very different.

0x10c is hard science fiction, while Starbound is more of a "soft" science-fiction, with huge aliens, lasers and penguins.
Both offer different kind of gameplay, Starbound being more aimed at discovery and on-land combat, whereas 0x10c is more about programming, economy and space battles.

Much like I LOVED Minecraft AND Terraria, I see no reason of flaming either Starbound or 0x10c - both are good, upcoming space games having different graphics, engine, general atmosphere and content. Even payment methods aren't the same - 0x10c has single-paid singleplayer, but P2P multiplayer, while Starbound is single-paid only.

Which doesn't stop me from trying 0x10c's multiplayer, when it comes out.
SHOULD have something like the first month of multiplayer gameplay being free (when you bought the game, ofc). Just to see if people like it. It isn't F2P, as you already have to buy 0x10c itself, but isn't wasting money, either.

So stop bragging and wait patiently.
Both games are worth a lot of attention.

Am I the only person that thinks that this is a pointless discussion? Hopefully not.
This is like saying Sega ripped off Nintendo with Sonic and Mario.
