First experience in DayZ standalone (or DayZ for that matter)

Jump in knowing fuck-all. Exploring a house when a random guy approaches and starts punching me. Finally work out how to pick up stuff. Guy didn't want to fight once I had the fire axe off the ground. Walked about 5 mins bleeding to death looking for civilization. Found a town. Fresh oranges did not solve the hemorrhaging issue. Can of soda staved off encroaching thirst for 30 seconds. Still have not worked out how to jump

So... how do I play this game exactly? :/
