Time for a random thought...

Yesterday I watched this movie called "Hensel and Gretel witch hunters" and I started thinking about something...
In this movie, witches are portraited as monstrous creatures with an ugly appearance, and they even give a "plausible" explanation for it! According to the movie, black magic corrupts your soul and it reflects in your external appearance.

Of course there's exceptions (slut teenager witches from some movies), but I realized this is how we show witches to our children too! They have a big nose, pointy hat, green skin, etc...
Obviously, this is not how witches really look like, because they are still humans! How does the fact that they do somethign different than the rest of the people, changes their appearance?

Then I started looking for other examples of groups of people who oposed each other in history, and how they pictured each other back then.
There's some interesting examples, like this picture the american army used to give their soldiers to help differentiate a chinese ally from a japanese enemy. Of course knowing the difference between an ally and an enemy during times of war may be helpful in a battle, but notice how they lend their soldiers biased and generic info for the sake of making their enemy look physically different.

Another example is this nazi poster showing germans throwing jewish students and teachers out of their schools.
Notice how the physical features that were considered "negative" in the jewish people are enhanced in this picture!
It's also interesting to notice that, instead of embelishing their own "positive" characteristics, they turn every german kid into a "poker face" with virtually no physical feature other than their stereotypical features, like the blonde hair. This way, every german can relate themselves with the "good people" from the picture, even tho the REAL differences between some of them are greater than the difference of some germans and some jews.

The same thing happens with some interpretations of biblical angels and demons.
There was no demons back then, only angels, but 2 distinct groups of angels fought each other for some reason, and the losers are now called demons and automatically look ugly, with red skin, horns, and bat wings instead of the beautiful white pidgeon ones...


All of this made me think about how far can humans go with their pre-concept of someone who's different than themselves.
It's common sense that some people discriminate those who look different, but it's intriguing how some people can get to the point of thinking that "if someone is different than me for whatever reason, it must also look different than me"

 

Too bad not all the songs sound how the should sound...
