Swimming pools can actually make me physically ill due to the chlorination. Hotel pools are especially guilty because they dump as much chlorine as is humanly possible into them.

 

It funny how we started talking about a plane crash and ended talking about pools and chlorine.

The ocean usually smells of salt and fish, and generally the only "litter" I see is dead jellyfish.
In cities it can get bad, though I still think it tends to maintain the proper scent. Are you on the east coast, perhaps? I haven't got any frame of reference for East coast beaches.

 

Having been to America, I can safely say: American beaches are shit.

 

How so? I've been to a few and I thought they were pretty good.

 

I'm just used to Australian beaches, which are generally regarded as being some of the best in the world.

I like the way Yahtzee puts it "whenever I pay more for a game here, I like to think of it as a 'having the world's best beaches tax'"

 

the internet seems to overwhelmingly vote in favour of brazilian and hawaiian beaches. You guys get one or two in the lists i lazily googled.
