Isn't that the story of every AAA game nowadays? They've all forgotten that there are more colors than brown, gray, and grit.
And that you can have a protagonist who isn't a gruff white male who had a family member killed to provide a plot.

 

Most of them. GTA V and a few other examples had a fairly colorful palette, and whenever someone says you can't have bleak and grit with colors, I point them to Half Life 2.

And yeah, the protagonist problem is so simple to solve it's dumb. Either have a character who isn't a gruff male marine (bonus points if he's a SPACE MARINE) or if you do have it, don't try to use him for drama and character development. He's a gruff marine. Don't pretend you're trying to get a Nobel here, just make it into what it is: a power fantasy.
