Starting the show off with a Fecal Ghost probably wasn't the best decision, but I take more issue with the ending. And the lack of character development.

P&S w/G was a weird one. Other then the end, I doubt it really was meant to have any real story.
But there's plenty of other weird ones out there.

Definitely. Just was a little put off by a few things, and that ending. Not quite sure if that was a serious Gainax Ending, or an intentional Gainax Ending.
