Qustions about the crew system

I have a few questions with the ship crew system:

Do Novakids or Penguins count towards having a member of every race for the achievement? I'm trying to balance out how many of each race with the maximum number of crew slots on the ship.

What NPC types can become Outlaws? I have looked in the game files and I don't see that one listed in the NPC scripts.

Is there a maximum limit the Mechanic can add to the ship fuel tanks? I got a mechanic early game and they have been going nuts boosting fuel capacity.

Any info on these questions would be useful, and this would be a good place for other questions people may have about the crew system that may not be covered in the wiki.

Plus if enough information is gathered I might be able to make a chart listing what NPC/Tenant types produce certain crew members.

How do crew members upgrade the ship? i've had 3 for a while now and still no ship upgrades.

The Mechanic boosts fuel capacity every so often and the Engineer boosts fuel efficacy (you use less per trip).

The actual ship size upgrades is based on the number of crew members you recruit (Every 2 crew members triggers and upgrade quest until you max out the ship) or fake licenses you buy.

How quickly do you typically get crew members? I've done a ton of missions without anyone asking to join my crew(I already have 2 members)
I think I might be stuck because my first two crew members came after doing only a few missions each.
Also I have the sparrow ship upgrade and I'm pretty sure I need 4 members to get the Kestral?

No you are not stuck due to early recruitment

It is pretty random as to how many race missions you need to do before they become available to recruit, Some do not ask you but, do change to the protector uniform and wait for you to ask them, and I think this has happened to other characters in the area, not just the one you completed the mission for, so keep your eyes open. (This can not be confirmed as I am not 100% sure i did not complete a mission for that character earlier in my travels, but pretty sure I would have recruited them if i had)

Thank you sooooooo much, I have been scouring the internet for an answer and now I have it! I didn't even notice the costume change until you told me. I now have a few more crew :nuruhappy:

The NPC to Crew Member change can be somewhat annoying, I had three Glitch Guards turn into Mechanics in the same village and I already had a Floran Mechanic on my ship, so I resorted to installing the Job Offers mod to get specific crew members I wanted (I'm going for one of every crew member type).

On another note... I also found that all those "escort NPC's friend back to town" quests often results in the NPCs more or less remaining in the town as long as they live.

Unlike tenants, they will be gone forever of course.... but all of them can equally generate quests as much as tenants and all are just as much recruitables.

It could be interesting if there was a more streamlined ways of guaranteeing some crew designs though(such as having guards more frequently "upgrade" into soldiers... perhaps with their original weapons).

Some NPC/Tenet types actually have certain Crew Member types, I plan to make a chart for this but I need more information on the relations, I can get some of this from the unpacked game assets.

Does anyone know how to get your crew members to be a more...sporadic? I have 6 crew members now and they all tend to gather in the first two rooms. It's getting crowded. Granted I don't have much furniture around (yet) for them to interact with beyond the two rooms, so I'm wondering if that's the case.

Having more furniture in various parts of your ship definitely helps, random chairs and fires go a long way to making your people more lifelike, a couple of the various computer consoles they might interact with as well.

It might also be worth taking a double look to make sure your base is moderately easy to path around, 3 wide platforms with 3 spaces in between them is a happy medium I find, though the AI has a max jump height of 8. (one more than the players default). This especially applies to surfaced furniture, as it can really fidangle the AI's pathing. Even common things like tables or fridges can cause problems.

Also, in my experience, that AI does not handle elevators well at all.

I'm having the same issue with crew members, they keep insisting on using the one bed in the room I set for myself, even though I have 12 other beds in a nearby room, good thing I have the Advanced Proximity Sensors mod, I was able to lock them out of the captain's quarters.

I see them go to the furnace and sometimes the arcade machine, passing the area where the extra beds are, plus that section is made for easy path finding.

I put some chairs near the pilot's seat. They love to go there. And also the beds that I placed in the same place as in this ship. Sometimes there are 9 or more npcs there.

Btw, I managed to hire one of a blue aliens and a shadow one with the Job Offer mod:

Well I have found that outlaws tend to be criminals who you decide to not kill and if they don't summon reinforcements. I have never seen how to get a shadow npc to become a crew member, did you have him as a tenant to get him as a crew member?

I don't know if you can have a shadow npc as a tenant. I hired him with the Job Offer mod.

Changing uniform has influence on crew member recruiting? I have recruited about 5-6 members and am running around in casual clothing..

Ah, no, he means that when they're ready to join your crew, THEY will change into the protectorate uniform. What you wear has no effect on the rate at which they decide to join your crew. He just said that they might not ask to join your crew because you're not close enough to trigger their speech, but they will be willing to join if you talk to them. Just look out for people wearing the Protectorate uniform.
