The windows update dosn't work for me either, it just permanently gets stuck on a loading bar. "Searching for updates on this Computer" and won't progress from there at all.

I was also having this issue but as others stated, uninstalled game, than deleted the starbound folder and all the left over content. Reinstall and worked.

The update only applies to Win 7 SP1 not Win 7 itself. I can't say if it is an OS limitation or not. I'm also not part of the staff so i can't say if they will change something about it.

So I have the same issue, but it was fine yesterday. I also had this issue with the unstable before, but now it came to stable with the update. I get no error, and steam just goes green then blue(for the unstable), but the stable gives me an error Access violation. This is driving me nuts because it seems that no one has had this problem before because I can't find it anywhere. Apparently it has to do with my sound card because that was next to be loaded according to logs from others, but I've tried reinstalling, unplugging, different headphones, and nothing.

with the right mouse button and properties there you should Compatibility tab appear and try switching between the different options but not having Windonws 7 is not as help

OP here, long story short, the past hours while i did not reply, i have tried several things.
Apparently installing visauls c++ 2015 would either succeed or give an error, either way the file required i mentioned a while ago still was not being installed to my windows despite the setup saying "Setup successful"
Well again long story short i have just updated to windows 10 reinstalled starbound and it works now thanks.

For those unable to install the vc redist, where it loads forever or fails, I found a solution for my brother who had this problem (on windows 7), and hopefully it can help others. You need to go into your services and stop the windows update service, if it is running. You may need to reboot after this, but my brother did not need to do so. Now, you can go find the .msu from the vc redist that should be in C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\54050A5F8AE7F0C56E553F0090146C17A1D2BF8D\packages\Patch\x64 or something similar and hopefully it will install when you run it manually. The problem for my brother appeared to be that windows update was failing to check for updates, and so no updates could even be installed manually because they become queued to install after the update scan is complete or something. And it never completed. Hope this helps at least someone!

So now i have installed sp1 and a so called KB3020369 update direct from ms, gone into my Controlcenter and just repaired the 2015 vc redist(If you dont have it then dl it ;) ).
Installed .net framework to 4.6.1 and started via steam, it loaded and worked! But there was no launcher startup, it went and started the game directly. Thank you for your help and maybe even this helps someone.

    Link for KB blabla update:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369
in case you dont have it and are too lazy to search :D

Also might be worth noting, I only have VC 2015 x64 and NOT x86 installed.

Move your unpacked assets to another location or rename the unpacked folder to something else starting with _ so that it won't get loaded.

I have no idea what that means.

in your starbound folder you'll find an folder named assets. inside this folder is an folder named "unpacked". This is the folder causing the crash. If you don't need the unpacked assets you can delete the folder. If you need the folder move it outside of the assets folder or rename it to something else starting with a _ (e.g. _unpacked)

same problem here. it just refuses to start and THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME! i just want to know if i have to start over again?!
Also: i don't understand most of the techtalk that is happening above my post. is there a way to fix it now or is my game just damned to be dead untill there is a patch?

I hear there were wipes, but I've only been playing the game through the unstable updates so I may as well have had no effect.
