[Spoiler-ish] How many levels in Skull Cavern?

Is it endless? I've been past level 120 with no signs of it ever stopping. Does anyone know if it actually has a bottom?

If you've gotten to Skull Cavern, how far down have you gotten?

Also, do you have any idea what level iridium nodes begin to appear?

I find my Iridium through extensive bombing, but I can't pinpoint you to an exact floor.
It does get more and more common the deeper you get.

 

Theoretically it is bottomless though it is limited by your remaining time staying awake (pack a teleport home)

 

It isn't even theoretically bottomless. The deepest possible level is 2,147,483,647 as that is how high the number denoting level can go.

 

However, it is effectively bottomless, since, short of cheating, I can't imagine actually making it down over 2.1 billion levels.

Considering it would take you roughly 67 years if you're going at the rate of 1 floor/second you have your work cut out for you.

I forgot about the 32 bit limit, thank you. Although you would need to cheat engine the number since it is almost impossible to reach the required floor manually due to in-game time constraint and that you won't reach past a 6 digit floor as you can't hold more than 35,964 stairs (What is the stair stacking limit?)

 

AFAIK 1, as stairs are a craftables and craftables don't stack.

Actually, the lowest possible floor isn't 2,147,483,647, it's 2,147,483,527. The reason for this is that the 'mine floor' count carries over from the regular mine, so floor 1 of the desert mine is actually mine floor 121.

There's nothing special on floor 2,147,483,527 , BTW. And if you try to take a ladder to go deeper the game crashes.

I don't know how people are talking about getting to levels in the hundreds. The deepest I've ever been is the high 30s -- and not because I die, but because that's when 2:00 a.m. rolls around.

Taking care of my animals means I usually don't get to the cave until the late morning -- but even with a few more hours, I can't see how I'd ever get more than 10-20 levels deeper in a day.

Are you guys using a ton of portable staircases, or just getting super-lucky with the sinkholes shooting you down several levels at a time?

 

Bombs are reasonably cheap to make and really help you find staircases quicker, since you don't need to go around manually breaking every stone.

 

I got this far with mods, but as you can see all the iridium is gone and only diamonds generate.

 

That'll be a fun thing to do on a boring weekend~
