Don't hyltol still need air even though they can go under water for longer?

 

Well the whole idea of breathing under water is that even fish need oxygen to survive and stuff, they just need it in smaller portions so their gills are basically their lungs, filtering out the oxygen in the water so it can be processed in the body.

So my verdict is yes, yes Hylotls do still need air since air is in water and Hylotl need one and/or the other to survive because otherwise they would suffocate.

EDIT: I assume Hylotl have a mechanism for breathing in the open atmosphere too just like humans, which is what makes them more amphibian people rather than fish people, so they don't suffocate once they leave the water just like other fishy thingys.

The main thing I was questioning was if they could just stay alive in the water without resurfacing.

 

Technically, the hylotl are just anthropomorphic Axolotl. therefore, they are amphibian and still need need to breathe air.

So to answer your question:

No, hylotl can still drown like everyone else.

 

Well considering they've built villages underwater(well not yet I think but they're getting implemented) I'd make a pretty big assumption that they can survive under water without even seeing the bright sunny beaches of land.

Just remember they are amphibian, not fish...that should solve your confusion issues.

I should probably clarify that this village isn't just right next to the ruins, It's kinda further out in the ocean. Another important detail that I forgot to add in was the fact that the village is almost completely made of wood.
