From my knowledge, you can buy any ship with actual money, but all ships are also allowed to be gained through the in-game currency.
As for subscriptions etc., I don't think the game is subscription based, but quite a bit of revenue is going to be coming in by the microtransactions that can be done.
..And now I sleep in comfort because it is very warm in my room.

 

Currently it's still in crowdfunding though it's well funded at this point. You can "pledge" to buy a game package which will include a copy of the final game and a ship to start off in the persistent universe. If you want to sink in more money you can buy better ships or other odds and ends.

The final game will be buy to play (no subscription). All the ships and gear that can be bought via pledging will be available to earn in the game proper. To my knowledge the current plan for monetisation is to offer the ingame currency for purchase, albeit capped (to stop people with way too much money from just getting absurd amounts of credits) - devs have stated anything like that they add will be cosmetic in nature. Not sure with regards to DLC but I don't believe there is plans for any (game will be supported by free updates like warframe for instance)
