only in the "finding alien technology". in mass effect, they got the faster-than-light travel. this is more "anything you can imagine", hence the "indistinguishable from magic". when i start writing, it'll(probably) be closer to dark fantasy, than sci-fi.

I like to think technology -of which the inner workings are enigmatic to me- are in fact a form of magic.
Once you know how something works, it loses that magic.

That will be our future. Human-powered everythings, since we are practically a renewable resource by now.

 

depends on what kind of magic it is. Lets say you can make a fireball come out of your hands.
This might be seen something more along the lines of psy energetics, or soemthing of this sort, or maybe even extend into a more depth study of ki or chakra or whatever you want to call it

reminds me of an argument about magic/alchemy, and how magic is closer to science than alchemy is. shame i can't remember the conversation.

 

I heard something like alchemy is more sciency than science because it is doing things to other things and seeing the results

i could argue this as well. As a matter of a fact, i would even go so far as to argue that alchemy is closer to science in the sense that a number of rules in alchemy are still present in chemistry, and even in various other sciences as well. A good example is the famous law of equivalent exchange, which still holds true to this day. You cant simply make gold out of thin air, but you cant lose any of the pieces you put in either. Everything you put in will remain, just changed. Some more useful than others.

Interesting fact: Technically modern-day science and technology could turn lead into gold. It'd just be not very probable, and the resulting atom(s) of gold would probably decay into other elements. Yay for fission!
This is my definition of magic and alchemy in terms of fictional settings.
I generally define magic by the ability to intuitively and innately be able to control forces outside the body without devices/technology or augmentation (and without needing to have the body interact with other objects, unless the mind is using the objects to channel the forces being controlled). Though the objects should need not be able to function without the mind.
Alchemy is the combination of science and magic, with the concept of science being applied to magic. It uses magical ability and techniques to enhance an object, device, or scientific process. For example, turning lead to gold is a process, a mechanical homunculi fueled by magic is a device, and an enchanted weapon is an object.
