But the issues were coming sooner or later. Twitch knew that they'd grown too big to slip under the radar of themajor copyright law holders, and since Google had to deal with this already they decided to not let it come that far.
They had to decide between Content ID and inevitably getting sued for an awful lot of money.

I don't remember the Google-deal ever having been confirmed. Did I miss the announcement or is Google having a hand in this really just speculation?
