Good question; why do mammals smile and expose their teeth when being friendly - it doesn't seem like a very nonthreatening signal.

Actually, it's even more specific than mammals (you probably knew this, but I love a chance to infodump). Humans are the only creature on Earth to use bared teeth a friendly gesture. Even apes 'smile' as a warning to keep distance (smiling back at an ape is a bad idea), and none of us would approach a dog who was 'smiling' at us (usually we call it a snarl...)

So what do we learn from this? Grinning at Deneb could get you hurt...
