From what I understand, the myth that they do has a tiny, tiny grain of truth. Of course, vaccines don't actually cause autism. Autism is genetic. However, they do, in extremely rare cases, cause encephalitis. (Or at least they used to; they may have been perfected past that point by now.) Part of the myth that vaccines cause autism is that the government pays off families to keep them quiet. When a vaccine does cause encephalitis, the family is paid, but it is not an attempt to keep them quiet. It is probably to keep them from suing or something.
Obviously, the benefits of vaccines still far outweigh the risks.
