Bug/Issue Starbound Freezing with 100% Disk usage, 0kbps Read/Write

I have a powerful computer (specifically, I have a GTX970 and an i5-4460) and Starbound runs fine when it works. However, Starbound has been freezing completely for periods of several minutes at seemingly random times. During these freezes, most of the time most programs can't run properly (browser doesn't load, windows file explorer doesn't respond, new applications won't open). When I view resources when this problem occurs, the hard drive I have Starbound installed on reports 100% usage to task manager, but 0kbps read and write. This is on my E: drive.

This hard drive is a 480GB Sandisk SSD. I have already updated/verified/reinstalled starbound, and updated my bios firmware. Neither has solved the issue. This problem only occurs with starbound. It occurs on both the 32 and 64 bit versions.

Attached is the log file... but I don't see anything that seems abnormal.

    Also, I use Windows 10.

    Please help!

RAM usage? installed RAM? these are needed

with the disk usage tho, every time i look at task manager disk usage is at 100%, not just with SB open

I have 16 GB of ram installed, and am not using all of it.

I attached a screenshot mid-freeze. Note the spike of disk usage.

I still am having this problem, and have not found any solution.

Hey I have the same problem as well, and for the sake of keeping this alive before it is closed-- I havent seen a single thread even beyond Chucklefish Forums that explain a fix for this. Not only that but it is happening with a vast amount of players it would seem.

It is happening to me too. I have to skip the intro mission because it freezes right after the ceremony when the ruin appears. Also the sound shuts off after a while.

My issue may be slightly different than yours, as mine does not occur at any predictable moment. It just happens randomly, where yours specifically freezes at the intro mission. Also, the sound on mine never stopped, until I force closed the program.

Bump. Still having this issue. The game is currently unplayable.

Do you have the Steam Overlay turned on in-game? Is there a specific special reason you are using the OpenGL settings? What gamepad/joystick are you using specifically? Have you tried turning off V-sync?

I just tried without Steam Overlay, and it still had the same issue. I don't see anything relating to OpenGL in the graphics settings... I'm not sure what you mean there. I have a Steam Controller plugged in, but I don't use it at all (it's off, but the usb reciever is plugged in). I play in windowed mode, so V-Sync has to be off. I just tried fullscreen, and still had the issue.

Thank you for the clear response! Can you possibly submit a screenshot of the settings in your nVidia control panel? Furthermore, try unplugging your Steam controller's USB receiver just to be thorough. Since you do have V-Sync off, try it without the Steam controller receiver and V-Sync both on and off.

Let's see if we can't nail down this issue for you!

Finally, can you submit a full list of your systems specifications?

These are the components of my computer:
    • EVGA GTX 970 (SC ACX 2.0)
    • i5-4460
    • ASRock H97M Anniversary LGA1150
    • 4x8 GB Kingston HyperX Fury Blue DDR3-1866 MHz RAM
    • EVGA 500B PSU
I have tried with and without fullscreen, and I still do not see any V-Sync option. Unplugging the steam controller did not solve the issue. I also tried the Texture LImit option, though I am not sure what it does. It did not fix the issue, as it still froze. I am still not really noticing a pattern as to when it freezes. I thought it might be only when loading new areas/chunks, but it has frozen even when not moving. I took two screenshots to show the global 3d settings of my nvidia control panel, as it had to scroll - all of the options are shown in the two screenshots. Also, before I even made this post, I updated the BIOS firmware, to no avail.

Also, on one of the displays in this screenshot, it shows the resource monitor and the task manager, during a game freeze.

Excellent, very thorough! So starting with your nVidia settings, scroll down and change "Power management mode" to "Optimize Performance." All other settings are good. Next, For the "Vertical Sync" option at the bottom there, after you change the power management setting, change that to "On, unless application states otherwise" or similar; it may be worded differently but something to that effect. I have attached a photo to this post that shows you where in your starbound.config file (located in the game's directory, inside the storage folder, same as the log file) to set V-Sync on or off in-game.

Next, based on your log file, the areas that take the longest to load from disk are identified in the spoiler below. I've bolded them and also the additional possible problem with your assets\user folder.

Note most importantly that your TilesetDatabase and EmoteProcessor are taking an unusually large fractional of time to process; this calculation may be causing a problem. The first thing after changing the settings I recommended would be to delete the packed.pak file in the game's install directory, storage\assets folder. Then have Steam verify the game cache to redownload a fresh copy. If you have anything in your assets\user folder, try removing that as well. See if that works with all of that worked out.

Finally, I am assuming you are running a vanilla game?

I tried setting the power mode of the nvidia control panel to prefer performance, turning off vsync in the configuration, and deleting and re-downloading packed.pak. The issue persisted with each of these changes. The game is unmodified. Note that this issue still occurs with new characters and on other worlds, so it is not a map or character bound issue.

Apologies for the delay. Life intervened, but I've got a breather for now to respond to you!

Did you tinker with changing the V-Sync option on/off to see if things change at all? Do try setting the display option between fullscreen/borderless windowed/windowed while doing so, and see what happens as well.

I just experienced this issue on another game as well (specifically, Euro Truck Simulator 2), so I'm going to start looking at other causes. It happens much more often when using Starbound, but I'm not sure what the actual cause is. I think I'll take this to Microsoft, but they'll probably tell me to contact the hard drive manufacturer. Anyways, thanks for the help.
