How thin does it have to be to stop most pistol calibers, say .38's and down, and falter rifle rounds? And would that help weight wise?

Well, if your main goal was to just stop .38 rounds that were typically used at the time, you could just wear an extra shirt or two. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, gangsters in the US started wearing vests made from multiple layers of cotton padding and cloth. These worked quite well against the not very powerful handgun rounds commonly used at the time, and resulted in the FBI changing to more powerful pistol rounds, first the .38 Special and subsequently the .357 Magnum.

There's a little history lesson for you.

Okay so think old timey...Okay..How thick and clunky would it have to be to stop an average rifle round and maintain some survivability to withstand a good couple shots?

Or alternatively, wear the compressed glass plating used by the Chlaqtis... You know the prince Rupert's drop? Apply that concept to a fulll plate of armor molded to shape, carefully remove the tails used to make the part, boom... You've got glass armor strong enough to withstand over 20 tons of force before breaking... (40k psi/ 275.8 megapascals. That's 275.8 meganewtons of force per square meter of surface area... I can show you a vid if you need proof.)

The key word in this is Somehow find a way to remove the tails without causing it to blow up.
    Use metal then.

When dealing with rifle rounds, especially WWI era rounds such as 8x57mm Mauser or .30-06 Springfield, body armour isn't going to cut it; even the German sentry armour was only good at stopping pistol threats and maybe rifles past their effective range.

And with that, you're looking at 20lbs without the headgear, 30lbs with.
There was the Brewster Body Shield:

But I don't need to explain why that's no good.

Supposedly, all of the tension is in the tail, ready to burst in a severed connection. But if you were to heat it in a way that the molecules remain still bonded together, you could melt the tail all the way down to the bead.
    Or magic. Because Chlaqtis.
Not sure, but it would be very heavy and only ideal against gunfire or high velocity bolts. It'd probably be like 30lbs at least for just the platevest.

Ooooookey dokey, with the new evidence that has come to light, I'll have his armor only strong enough to withstand pistol rounds..

    Damage report?

I'm always amused by people who claim that hardness = toughness. Sure, borosilicate glass is harder than steel, but it's brittle and non-flexible. Now, ceramic armour, that's something to talk about.
    Yeah, don't get shot.

Exactly, which makes it problematic especially when it's prone to shattering... While it's excellent if the bullet doesn't get a direct hit or lacks the punch(which is how the plates are designed, to graze bullets worn under cloth and on their backs. Buried in the sand with their backs donning a shield of it.), one good shot makes them useless...
However, there is also a vid of shooting a rupert's drop with a gun...
The bullet broke... Every time. It was always the tail snapping that was the issue..

I'd have to know what gun was used; we're worried about rifles.

So just keep the old heavy chest plate?

Roger that. On the plus side, you have a bit of protection from fragmentation and stabbing, so that is a good thing.

Kiss that speed goodbye Ray Mcall.

it's the shock of the bullet traveling into the tail being the thing that kills it.

Just say what is wrong, and sorry for taking so long.

    Race: Human
    Name: Hunter
    Age:21
    Pros:
Gunman: Years of shootouts in the streets and shooting around civilians have rendered him a crack shot with sidearms
Guardian:Will head into danger to defend others, more so of close allies.
Hardy: Many battles and old wounds have made him able to ignore large amounts of pain and take whatever life throws at him.
Chivalrous: Fighting through the hindrance of no social skills whatsoever, he maintains an nearly extinct form of leading kindness, especially towards women.
Old Tech savvy: He can work an old piece of technology any way you want it.
Resourceful: Leave him alone long enough with a piece of equipment, supplies and his tools, and you will get a moderately well made tool fitting of your needs.
Over prepares:Most people prepare for a small battle, he prepares for a War.
Blunt Weapon Specialist: He has no problem using any solid instrument nearby to lay out an unalarmed enemy.

    Cons:
Socially awkward: Has a rough time saying what he means and usually ends up causing more confusion than staying dead silent.
Magically Ignorant: Spent enough time to understand magic and haven't touched it since.
Attitude Changes: When he becomes angry, he will push through time consuming challenges and rush the situation
Lost in new Tech: Don't expect a miracle with the newest technology.
Strange style:His way of dress is one of a kind in a bad way, and he has trouble being missed, even in a crowd.
Strict Morals: He WILL NOT commit an action to harm the people, and if you want him to you better be ready to convince the world with him.
Soft Hearted:Unless you have a gun on him or made fun of him, he will likely give you a second chance.
Bladed Weapon lacking: He rarely uses knives or swords, preferring lead to steel .
Over Anticipating: His odds on a situation are much different to someone else's, in the opposition's favor.
Tightly Wound: He doesn't have a sense of humor and is always alert, seeming less appealing in a nonhostile environment, but missing little.
Panics in heavy odds: 2\1 odds he can handle, anything much worse and he starts to lose it. This is less serious in a Standoff or barehanded fight.

Alright folks, I finally got around to reading the updated apps that you folks had taking the wonderous effort to post.

@Jareix Cryvix Don't worry, I saw your app. I don't have any issues with it.
Nope, nothing wrong from what I can see.
Could you remind me again on what do you mean by "Old tech" again, and while you are at it, could you tell me where specifically is he savvy in "Old Technology".

One cannot know everything after all.
