Thanks! Best of luck to everyone in your writing endeavors!

  2. Another random question (hope I'm not being too intrusive, merely knowledge-deprived about the lives of other writers): do you guys write anything non-Starbound related? Or have you started writing only due to the wonderful community here?

I started writing outside of Starbound, but now a lot of what I write is Starbound-related. I should probably write more. :p

I used to (and still occasionally) write as a columnist online and for local news. I also have several unfinished novels lying about.

I have a lot of ideas for non-Starbound fiction but I never get around to writing them. Maybe someday I will write something. Maybe someday.

I actually sort of wrote a novel a few years ago. It was really short, only like a hundred and ten pages, but I was fairly proud of it.

I started writing a dream diary at one point, and I eventually had this really awesome lucid World of Warcraft dream; uber nerd here, and as I began to write out my dream, I started coming up with awesome ideas of how things could have kept going. Eventually I wrote a small story out it. That was my first experience in writing FanFiction, and from there I started putting more ideas to paper; or this case keyboard. Eventually I started a novel project: Scarlet Ice. I had really neat ideas for that one, and kinda dropped it and picked it back up several times changing the names, locations, characters, and descriptions of characters and eventually settled on what I have now.

You can find what's become of it
here on the forums. I plan that one day I'll pick it back up. I have the plot still in mind and how it will unfold, but I picked up my current work Diary of a Lone Avali.

I also write poetry on the odd occasion. I started a thread where I hope to collect and share everyone's poetry.

I have written original stuff and other fanfiction, but Starbound things are pretty much everything I've ever published (b/c wonderful community here), not counting some random snippets here and there. I used to work on a novel-kinda-thing but now I'm full on bound to the stars. I do plan on creating and publishing something original someday though.

I too have a random question. How do you guys feel about fan fiction in general? The only fanfic I've ever written is Starbound-related but that's mainly because Starbound is less a story with established characters and more of a setting. What are your thoughts on the matter?

I enjoy reading fanfiction. I'm a sucker for a good read on a subject that I enjoy. ^.^

The only fan fiction I've ever written or read is for Starbound, though I suppose I've read other fan fics. I'm generally cool with fan fiction so long as it's not copyright infringement.

  12. From a writing perspective, fanfiction can basically act as isolation exercises for your writing. The scaffolding of a previously existing world, characters, backstory, etc. allows you to modify or explore any story element at your leisure and end up with a good story by the end. Characterization is especially excellent for this: you can learn how to write types of characters if the derivative work is excellent enough. Furthermore, you're way more likely to get critiques or readers in a fandom than you are writing by yourself.

From a reading perspective, I can definitely appreciate fanfiction. There's usually top-tier works in the fandom that allow me to indulge in whatever deliciousness the original had.

I'm honestly not sure how a person could consider fanfiction to be bad in any way, aside from the idea of 'writer's rights' (and even that's a tenuous contention...).

Fanfiction in general isn't bad, but there is fanfiction that is bad. For instance, the canon-twisting near-porn fanfictions that exist of the Harry Potter series and other popular novels. *shudders* Dramione...

There are many kinds of fanfiction. I prefer the kinds of fics that are loyal to the original work and expand on it. It's interesting to read original stories within a already established setting. I guess that's why I like Starbound so much, because it's a sandbox universe; pretty much all fics have to be like that.

But then there are the types of fics that are made for self-gratification and wish fulfillment. That's not only bad in the sense they're usually poorly written, but they also are kind of responsible for the bad name fanfiction has in general. It's... kind of sad in a way. But I'm not saying it shouldn't be written; if the writer writes it for fun and/or intends to improve, it's okay. Not my preference tho

I suppose everyone has heard the horror stories about the fics of this kind, but I'm curious has anyone read a work of this kind? Like, from the deep end of the most toxic fics ever? I have, out of curiosity... it made me feel literally sick

  15. It isn't quite as bad as I thought it would be -- the bell curve is remarkably skewed towards the sanitary, grammar-friendly side of things, although this bell curve is a very steep one indeed. I suppose it varies heavily depending on which fandom you're in.
Search up MST fanfiction. The target fiction is usually of poor quality.

Alternately, you can take a look at My Immortal, often panned as the paragon of literary merit.

I'm soon to finish another Log Entry for Diary of a Lone Avali and was wondering if anyone would mind proofreading for me once it's done?

Oh my god I am SO F*CKING LATE! FORGIVE MEEEEEEE! :notworthy:
I suppose writing the script to an unfinished novel involving a lot of the popular children's fairy tails and children's stories being twisted into one dark fantasy story.
(Red riding hood is a wolf of the last surviving clan of anthropormorphic wolves and shapeshifts her face into a human by wearing her red hood, the humans are the bad guys hunting and killing the other sapient species, peter is the big popular wolf hunter that wants to get into the king' hunting squad and suddenly falls for Red the human, the cow who jumped over the moon is a witch who found a way to ressurect her clan and is going to steal the hearts of the kingdom's citizens, the dish spoon and gingerbread man are spying golems created by the cow, the three pigs are traitors and root out the locations of the other animalian clans, the cat with the fiddle and boots was forced into being a jester for the king and plots his assassination, the three bears are hired mercenaries living with the wolf clan after their own was slaughtered and are trying to raise a child (the third bear), and chicken little is attempting to find a way to collapse the sky upon the kingdom. Which involves summoning the dark god of despair Klosvixtir and making a blood pact of sacrificing the goose that lays golden eggs to him...
I personally read more original works than fan fiction, but there's definitely good fan fiction out there... There's also Zebe's aforementioned bad fan fiction that are just pathetic...Then there's the deeds to NOPE houses in NOPE valley with enclosed first class tickets to NOPEville... Yeah... Been there...

Hahaha there's Mr. Moesby fan fiction out there as well X3

  19. That's a pretty interesting screenplay pitch you've got there. I do quite like the idea of synthesizing dark fantasy and fairy tales into something more mythological and gritty. I wouldn't mind taking a read through it, if you'd be so obliging.
