I'm only learning myself but modding is immensely satisfying for those of us that don't have the time/aptitude for game development .

Get paint.net and the "sprite sheet export", "frameanimator", and "gridguiderender" plugins. Learn to work with layers and make everything layered (start with darker background colours and work forward). The trick is to use Hue, Saturation, and Light/Luminosity, and a maximum of 3 shades/saturation levels for each Hue. Keep your palets small!

 

It's generally a nice idea to keep the colors in a Pseudo 16-bit manner~

I dislike the theme for the glitch. Another robotic species, more modern, more techy, and something with background. An entire Destiny mod would be cool. OOH. Species: the fallen(from destiny)
