I started wondering earlier today whether the in-game chat of starbound could be connected to some external chat service, like IRC. I did a bit of digging on the forums, and found that getting chat out of the game is easy. The log file is updated continuously. So the challenge becomes, "Can you insert chat into the game from outside sources"? Now, the only way to make this work that I can think of is to have a client running on a mac, and use an applescript to hack the keyboard to paste responses into chat. This is just about as inefficient of a strategy that one could possibly imagine. Is there another way to insert chat into the game, like by faking client packets or something?
Like Minechat for Minecraft? You could create a bare-minimum client that does nothing but log into the server and can chat, but that would require rewriting the base code.
