    DragonsForce Weight of the Sky

Yay, stable! Everything besides the bugs looks great on unstable :)

  3. FaerieHawk

    FaerieHawk Subatomic Cosmonaut

So when's the stable update coming? Sorry if it's a dumb question. This is gonna be the first stable update I've experienced so I don't know what to expect!

  4. teilnehmer

    teilnehmer Existential Complex

Great news! I was having issues with my hoster providing the correct unstable version, so this is good to know. :)

  5. DragonsForce

    DragonsForce Weight of the Sky

Well, they are going to push it out as soon as they think it is "stable" enough. Could be on Monday, could be next Friday (Probably somewhere inbetween the two)

  6. FaerieHawk

    FaerieHawk Subatomic Cosmonaut

Thanks very much! :) Super excited now!! I didn't think it was so close to being here!

But don't quote me on it :) I'm not an employee'o'Chucklefish, so this is only my prediction based on previous updates and somebody's statement that it will be about a week after the unstable update.

    Hatsya Souji Parsec Taste Tester

    I'm hyped...

    BloodyFingers The End of Time

This can't be stressed enough: that is speculation, not an official release date or prediction.

We've had enough troubles with that sort of assumption, so apologies for my preemptive bucket of cold water.

  10. Xavier Darkheart

    Xavier Darkheart Pangalactic Porcupine

Well what to expect once upon a time was full data wipes, but that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far outdated. Just keep an eye out for the day you try to launch, and you get that beautiful little 'updating' box. :D

Stable on the horizon? :) Hope I can find enough time to play it, what with school starting up again and all that.

Also, does anybody know a thread or post that features large numbers of those wooden cabin designs? They are very cool!

Glad to see that stable is getting the update soon! I only play unstable, but good nonetheless.

  13. Campaigner

    Campaigner Giant Laser Beams

It's so hard to watch that stream's recording. It loads so insanely slow, even with good internet. Does anyone have a summary of what was said in the stream?

On the stable update, glad to know it's soon(ish). I mean, I play around on Nightly, but if it's coming to stable, then I'm sure it'll not be laggy as all hell when more than one NPC is visible. Can't wait.

I'd like to mention that I have personally, at the direct request of one of the developers, tested what happened when a character from the current Stable is loaded in the current Unstable, soon to be the new Stable.

There was exactly one non-breaking issue that @metadept thought he'd already covered.

    Mind you, this was modless.

As they say: No news, is good news! If you guys are too busy to post a development blog, then keep up the good work. (Although, I do like reading the blogs.)
    Keep up the good work!

Here's a transcript, I may have skipped very minor things or super frequently asked questions. I suggest starting at 36:55 if you just want to watch for newsworthy type discussion.

    11:30 - Stream starts.

37:12 - "We won't do any character wipes unless we physically cannot avoid it."

    38:25 - Katzeus cameo

45:46 - We already have the ability to spawn different monsters/NPCs/effects based on weather and time of day. We aren't using this system a lot right now but we plan to in the future.

46:25 - Combat Update features (besides weapon & monster mechanics):
    • Procedurally generated quests and meaningful quest progression
    • We're still going to expand on the colony stuff, anything that we couldn't squeeze into Pleased Giraffe
    • 51:00 - We did the Colony update before Combat and Story because we plan to tie quests heavily into colonies
    • A bunch of mission and story line work
    • Scriptable items - Items can do almost anything with a LUA script attached to them

    Livestream related:
    • Since 32:36 the team has been escorting a bunny to the core to get core fragments with them.
    • After nearly 16 minutes (48:25) the bunny has reached its destination!
    • 15 seconds later - The bunny is murdered by Healthire (who was in another room and may not have known how important the bunny was to the mission)
    • RIP bunny.. The team takes time to recover.
    • 49:32 - Tiyuri: "This has thrown me.. what question was I answering?"

49:43 - Custom, collaborative Space Stations that function similar to ships!

    • We don't really plan to do modular ships. The ships are central to the story line, or will be more so when the Story Update is complete.
    • But we do hope to add.. (Disclaimer: not sure if pre or post 1.0) ..a modular space station system. The space stations will function much like ships, but you will be able to build them entirely yourself out of blocks or whatever else you find. You'll be able to share them with other players, while using them as ships to travel from one place to another.
    • So.. it's not a modular ship system exactly, but you can make anything you want as a space station.

56:20 - New Matter Manipulator mode - Scanning!
    • Disclaimer: Very early, still in design stages, may change.
    • We never really wanted you to have to destroy villages just so you can get items you like for your own houses. So what we're hoping to do is introduce a 4th mode on your Matter Manipulator. This 4th mode will take the place of scanning from your 3D printer. Anywhere you go, even protected areas, you can scan what you see and then you're able to print them out on your ship. It will also supply information on those objects.
    • In the long term, perhaps after 1.0 we're not sure, we would like to give you access to a catalog of objects so that you can go around the whole universe and collect them all.
    • We have some huge fans of Metroid Prime in the office. The way we're envisioning the system is sort of like how you scan the environment in that game. It ties really nicely with our inspection system, so we think we can tie them both together, that way when you inspect an item you learn about it and then know how to make that object.

    1:03:12 to 1:06:00 - detailed Hunger discussion
    • Super simplified version: Hunger is very hard to do right unless you build your whole game around it, but it does a lot for immersion so we are going to improve ours and re-implement it.

1:07:00 - We're going to expand on the USCM a bit more. They are kind of a rogue human faction, unrelated to the Terrene Protectorate. (can't go into more details because they are spoilers)

1:10:31 - Player suggestion: Jet pack that runs on Erchius Fuel. Tiyuri: Good idea! We're planning to use back items as items with functions or status effects. So they will do things like buff your armor as well as cool functions like that jet pack.

1:11:20 - Optimization - Again, we are always working on it, but it is not a focus of ours right now. Closer to 1.0 and beyond, once the core game is made, you will see huge performance improvements when we make our optimization pass. No sense optimizing right now when we are still developing the core systems.

1:12:35 - We are planning to change how you unlock tech (currently via ship upgrades). The huge shipyard at the outpost will sell you upgrades that are a bit more modular. These upgrades will be a bit less linear than the current system. Some examples of buy-able upgrades:
    • Increase the size of a section of the ship
    • Tech unlocks
    • Regenerate health while on your ship
    • Ship flies faster between planets
    • Use less fuel to travel

1:14:42 - At the very start of the game you are going to meet the first ever Floran member of the Terrene Protectorate. "And if you play as a Floran, maybe you're the second one."

It is true that the Floran are a savage race, some of them are starting to question the way their race operates, and in doing so reaching out to other races. (1:19:32) - Even the Floran that become a bit more uh, "humanitarian", are still very much savages.. they just have some new ideas.

There are self-aware Glitch all over the universe and they freely join the Protectorate.

(1:34:55) - The Glitch were set up by an alien race to model the rise and fall of different civilizations. So they kind of went through time very quickly. They went from prehistoric Glitch all the way to modern day Glitch. The alien race that created them found that every race iteration of Glitch, when it reached a certain age, ended up destroying itself.

But then 1 race of Glitch got stuck in the medieval era (they glitched). So now those glitch, unless they are self-aware, actually believe they are "normal" creatures simply living out every day in a medieval society. This is due to their programming, as part of how the whole system was set up.

Occasionally though, a Glitch becomes self-aware, meaning they become aware of their own programming and are able to access a great deal of knowledge. They know all about space travel and many other things, including their own race's history. "Self-aware Glitch know what they are, that they are robots."

1:15:56 - We are planning add more control over moving stacks of items very soon. Currently we plan to have right click and shift right click do 2 different things, but we are still deciding on which button will do what. The 2 functions will be splitting the stack in half and taking off only 1 item.

Tiyuri is leaning towards normal right click taking off only 1 item at a time. He asked the chat what they thought and got a hodgepodge of answers.

1:20:16 - Starbound does already remember window positions. The issue people are having is that when you open anything else like a chest your inventory window moves to that position. A better solution might be moving the chest window next to your inventory window, that way it doesn't seem like your inventory is moving around on you. We are looking into that.

Displayed from here onward: NPCs now have "statuses" that they display under their name sometimes (usually seen when holding ALT or mousing over). There are currently 508 possible ones. These follow personality as well. So a "mean" NPC will perform mean actions, say mean things, and think mean things.

1:24:00 - Text boxes like chat bubbles and name-tags now stack in nicer ways, so you can read the text even when everything starts overlapping. This is demonstrated in a few ways.

Side note: Racial merchant tenants can sell their race's armor. This means that you get can armor for a race other than your own via merchant tenants.

1:31:22 - Player: "When are you going to introduce Novakid tenants?"
Me: "Note: There is just 1 right now, the Saloon tenant."
Tiyuri: "Hmm, we will. They've got a very special part to play in the story.

1:31:38: Player: You should have a competition for colony builds. -- Tiyuri: That's a cool idea. Maybe after the Stable update. We are talking about revamping our site as well. So, I'll run that idea by Molly(gos). We had over 200 entries for our recent story contest.

1:36:12 - Guest appearance by Katzeus again, but this time with Floki (the office cat).
